left her hospitalised, and insisted on joining the tour.<br />

The illness manifests itself in varying guises; in her<br />

case, she’d act as if aggressive or drunk, causing so<br />

much racket in Tokyo that the hotel called the police.<br />

David, not unreasonably, got upset if he saw Sue<br />

while on stage. It made House feel like an outcast.<br />

Worse, <strong>Bowie</strong> didn’t address the issue directly so<br />

House couldn’t even explain Sue’s illness first-hand.<br />

In those situations, as with most issues, it was<br />

Carlos Alomar who brought an almost spiritual,<br />

soothing attitude. ‘Carlos is a psychologist, a<br />

spiritualist, one of the most charming people in the<br />

world,’ says House. ‘We got on really well; I wouldn’t<br />

have enjoyed the tour without him. He was the one<br />

would distract <strong>from</strong> the problems.’<br />

On the Station to Station tour, there was always<br />

the sense that David was head of a family; this time<br />

around, it seemed that he was head of a business<br />

empire. Coco and Pat Gibbons formed the nucleus<br />

of Isolar, David’s management company, which<br />

changed in form over the next few years, but would<br />

always have David at its apex. In those early days,<br />

the fact that David effectively managed himself<br />

marked him out as a maverick; but that would<br />

change. The beginnings of the realisation that he<br />

was a businessman, as well as an artist, came with<br />

the announcement that he would release a live<br />

album, recorded primarily in Philadelphia, while the<br />

tour was still rolling across Japan. The double album<br />

was intended both to scupper the efforts of<br />

bootleggers and count towards David’s RCA
