Science uses SI units (Systeme International d'Unitb, so spelled, not Interna-<br />
tionale). SI units are entirely consistent. Table 1.2 lists the basic units, that<br />
is, ones that <strong>for</strong>m the building blocks of science. Table 1.3 lists the com-<br />
mon named derived units. There is some confusion in the USA because their<br />
industries, and even some of their scientific journals, continue to use units<br />
that are not consistent. Twenty-five years ago, 136 countries were metric or<br />
changing to metric and the only countries not going metric were Barbados,<br />
Jamaica, Liberia, Nauru, Sierra Leone, S. Yemen, Sultanate of Muscat &<br />
Oman, Tonga and the USA!<br />
The degree Celsius, "C, has the same value as a kelvin but the scale is<br />
measured from the freezing point of pure water (273.15K). Centigrade is<br />
not the SI unit and should not be used. For the measurement of angles the<br />
'decimal' degree, the grade, with 400" in a circle, never received wide accep-<br />
tance and we continue with 360" to the circle, each degree being divided<br />
