Preface Réamhrá
The Office of Public Works and Donegal County Council
are delighted to offer the Irish public an unprecedented
opportunity to appreciate, and engage with, the
extraordinary artistic and cultural output of the great
Hungarian / French artist Victor Vasarely.
Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) is internationally recognised as
one of giants of 20th century art. He is the acknowledged
leader of the Op art movement, and his innovations in colour
and optical illusion, and in the democratisation of art, have
had a profound influence on contemporary art and design.
The Victor Vasarely exhibition is without doubt the most
significant project that the OPW and Donegal County Council
have collaborated on to date. A huge debt of gratitude is
owed to the collective talents of Adrian Kelly, curator of
the Glebe House & Gallery, and John M. Cunningham,
curator of the Regional Cultural Centre. Not only have they
endeavoured to bring the Vasarely exhibition to Ireland, they
have succeeded in coordinating an international tour which
will see the exhibition travel to the Fondation Vasarely (Aixen-Provence,
France) and to the Museum Vasarely (Pécs,
Hungary), later this year.
This trans-national project could not have been realised
without the personal and profession commitment of so
many. We would particularly like to extend our appreciation
to H.E. Yvon Roe D’Albert, The French Ambassador to
Ireland: H.E. Ferenc Jári, The Hungarian Ambassador to
Ireland: Dr. Józef Sárkány, The Vasarely Museum (Pécs,
Hungary): M. Xavier Huertas, Foundation Vasarely (Aix-en-
Provence, France): M. Pierre Vasarely (Association pour la
défense et la promotion de l’oeuvre de Vasarely): Madame
Denise René (Galerie Denise René, Paris, France) and to the
various private lenders.
Minister Michael Manseragh T.D.
Minister of State at Dept. Finance with
special responsibility for the OPW
Cllr. Gerry Crawford
Méara Chontae Dhún na nGall /
Mayor of the County of Donegal
Saothair neamhchoitianta is ea saothair ealaíonta agus
chultúrtha an ealaíontóra mhóir Ungáirigh / Francaigh Victor
Vasarely agus is cúis mhór áthais d’Oifig na nOibreacha
Poiblí agus do Chomhairle Contae Dhún na nGall deis a
thairiscint do phobal na hÉireann den chéad uair tuiscint a
fháil ar na saothair sin agus dul i ngleic leo.
Aithnítear Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) go hidirnáisiúnta
mar dhuine de mhór-ealaíontóirí na fichiú haoise. Is é
príomhealaíontóir ghluaiseacht na hEalaíne Optúla é agus is
mór an tionchar a bhí ag na nuálaíochtaí a rinne sé i ndath
agus i seachmaill radhairc, agus i ndaonlathú na healaíne, ar
ealaín agus ar dhearadh na linne seo.
Níl aon amhras ach gurb é taispeántas Victor Vasarely
an tionscadal is suaithinsí ar a chomhoibrigh Oifig na
nOibreacha Poiblí agus Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall
go dáta. Tá mórchuid buíochais ag dul do Adrian Kelly,
coimeádaí an Glebe House & Gallery, as a bhuanna, agus
do John M. Cunningham, coimeádaí an Ionaid Chultúrtha
Réigiúnaigh. Ní amháin gur éirigh leo taispeántas Vasarely a
thabhairt go hÉirinn, ach d’eagraigh siad turas idirnáisiúnta
don taispeántas ina dhiaidh sin. Taistealóidh sé chuig
Fondation Vasarely (Aix-en- Provence, an Fhrainc) agus
chuig Músaem Vasarely (Pécs na hUngáire), níos déanaí sa
bhliain.
Ní fhéadfaí an tionscadal trasnáisiúnta seo a fhíorú gan
tiomantas pearsanta agus gairmiúil mórchuid daoine. Ba
mhaith linn go speisialta ár mbuíochas a ghabháil lena
Shoilse, Yvon Roe D’Albert, Ambasadóir na Fraince go
hÉirinn; le H. E. Ferenc Jári, Ambasadóir na hUngáire go
hÉirinn; leis an Dr. Józef Sárkány, Músaem Vasarely (Pécs
na hUngáire); le M. Xavier Huertas, Foundation Vasarely
(Aix-en-Provence, an Fhrainc): le M. Pierre Vasarely
(Association pour la défense et la promotion de l’oeuvre
de Vasarely); le Madame Denise René (Galerie Denise
René, Páras na Fraince) agus leis na hiasachtóirí éagsúla
príobháideacha.
