Le Mouvement 2008
In 1955, Victor Vasarely and Denise René curated a (now
legendary) group exhibition at Galerie Denise René entitled
‘Le Mouvement’ (the motion). In addition to Marcel Duchamp,
Alexander Calder and Vasarely, the exhibition included works
by Yaacov Agam, Pol Bury, Jesús Rafael Soto, Yaakov Agam
and Jean Tinguely. This exhibition provided an important
framework and impetus for the artists who were laying the
foundations of Kinetic Art. In Le Mouvement 2008, artist
Mhairi Sutherland leads a team of young artists to recapture
the excitement and dynamism of Op and Kinetic art for the
21st Century.
“I think this project is fantastic! It’s so cool! It’s really helpful
for me because doing art in school involves being able to
expand your view on things and write them onto paper. I’ve
gotten so many things from such simple pieces of art and it’s
so interesting. I haven’t done art for about a year now so I love
being able to get back into it, especially in such a big way.”
Kevin Carter, 16
“I do art in school and I have a real passion for it, so after a
year of not having assigned art projects (transition year), this
project means a lot to me. I hope the project will only further
my love and enjoyment of art and that the whole thing will be
a success!”
Jamie McGettigan, 16
“I think that Le Mouvement 2008 will help me to express
myself and my ideas through my art. I hope to be able to show
others how art is another way of expression and show how
to use art instead of words. I also hope it helps to make me
stronger in using my talent in life.”
Aoife Gallagher, 17
“I’m really enjoying this art course, as it’s not like anything I’ve
done before. We have been given a challenge to create a piece
of art that has to do with movement and it has made me think
deeper about what art really is. I am seeing things in a new
light and am having great fun in trying to create a piece that
reminds me of Duchamp’s work.”
Aoife Conway, 17
“The art project to me is a new experience. An opportunity
to learn about a branch of art you see everyday on clothes
and everyday life, and it's influences on modern art. This
was a chance to add my talent to great talents. What I hope
to gain from this experience is a new approach to art and an
appreciation for abstract art. What really fascinates me about
this project is the science of art.”
Theophilus Boakye, 18
“I started this because I am really interested in art and I
thought it was a great idea and that I would have a lot of fun.
I hope to gain more experience in art and develop my skills
through this and enjoy it and have fun doing it. So far I have
really enjoyed the experience and I hope to do a lot more.”
