A letter from the Treasurer of the University acknowledging re
ceipt of the trial balance of July 31, 1915, was presented and placed
on file.
A communication was received from Doctor John A. Hartwell an
nouncing
certain gifts to the Medical College as follows :
A donation of $1,000 a year for five years from Mrs. Whitelaw Reid,
and a donation of $1,000 a year for five years from Mr. William A.
Read, toward the payment of salaries of full time men holding posi
tions on the Surgical Staff of the Second (Cornell) Division, Bellevue
Hospital, and a donation from Mrs. John A. Hartwell, of $2,000, or
such part of it as may be necessary to cover any deficit, or meet inci
dental expenses connected with the work.
Whereupon it was resolved that these gifts be accepted with the
sincere thanks of the Council to the generous donors, and it was
further resolved that the Secretary of the Council be instructed to
communicate the foregoing resolution to the donors.
Upon the request of the Council Doctor Hartwell was called and
explained the arrangement planned for the temporary organization of
the Bellevue Hospital Service ; whereupon it was resolved that for the
Bellevue Hospital Service the following items appropriated in the
Budget (1915-1916) be allotted the Surgical Division.
One Medical Assistant $450 00
Nurses (Item $1,720)
For Surgical use (Item $7,000)
Further resolved that the above sums plus
1,000 00
3,000 00
$4,450 00
Appropriation for Surgical Asst 450 00
Donations through Doctor Hartwell 2,000 00
be expended as follows :
$6,900 00
Two (2) Assistant Surgeons at $2,500 $5, 000 00
One (1) Laboratory Assistant 1,500 00
$6,500 00
Nursing and incidental expenses to be provided for a contingent
by
fund offered by Mrs. Hartwell.
Moved and carried that the Medical College Council make recom
mendations to the Board of Trustees as follows :
1. That the following special course fees be paid to the following
instructors :
Doctor J. M. Wheeler, 4 students at $25
Doctor B. Samuels, 1 student at $75 \
