Cornell University.
My dear Sir:
The Cornell Women of Washington have drawn up the following
resolution which we beg you to present to the Board of Trustees of
Cornell University at their meeting of January 15 :
' '
We, the Cornell Women of Washington, wish to urge upon the
Trustees the further consideration of the appointment of a woman to
the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Recognizing the very high teach-
i ng ability of many of the women teachers throughout our American
Colleges and educational institutions, we feel that Cornell should no
longer deprive herself of the services of such teachers, particularly
since their presence in the Faculty would be of especial benefit to the
already large number of women students.
We, therefore, ask that upon the occurrence of the first suitable
vacancy, or in the event of establishing a new professorship, every
effort be made to find a woman for that place, altering if necessary,
the standard set by the Trustees and Faculty to conform to that
already in force in the choice of men for such positions, and putting
especial emphasis upon successful teaching experience and inspira
tional
ability."
