LDH leakage<br />

Figure 9 (upper panel) shows that LDH leakage gradually<br />

increased with <strong>the</strong> duration <strong>of</strong> repcrfusion; however, as<br />

shown in Study 1, this increase may represent <strong>the</strong> overall<br />

accumulation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enzyme ra<strong>the</strong>r than net release <strong>of</strong><br />

LDH. Thus regression analysis (Figure 9, inset) revealed<br />

an LDH leakage pr<strong>of</strong>ile similar to that seen in Study 1.<br />

The LDH leakage pr<strong>of</strong>ile was similar to controls when<br />

atrial slices were incubated in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> ncutrophils<br />

for <strong>the</strong> first 12 h <strong>of</strong> rcpcrfusion; however, after 24 h <strong>of</strong><br />

rcperfusion, LDH leakage was substantially increased<br />

when compared with <strong>the</strong> group without neutrophils<br />

(20.32+0.64 versus 11.02+0.5 units/g wet wt respect-<br />

ivcIv; P
