that KATp channels are altered, with a greater outward<br />

single-channel current in <strong>the</strong> ventricular myocardium. <strong>of</strong><br />

diabetic rats, fiu-<strong>the</strong>r support this <strong>the</strong>sis. Clearly, fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

research is needed to fidly elucidate how <strong>the</strong> alteration <strong>of</strong><br />

this channel contributes to <strong>the</strong> failure to precondition <strong>the</strong><br />

myocardium <strong>of</strong> diabetics.<br />

Preconditioning and <strong>the</strong> failing <strong>heart</strong>. Left ventricular<br />

hypertrophy and LV chamber dilation are among <strong>the</strong><br />

compensatory mechanisms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> failing <strong>heart</strong>. There is<br />

experimental evidence that <strong>the</strong> hypertrophied myocardium<br />

is at greater risk from ischemia/reperfusion injury, and it is<br />

generally believed that <strong>the</strong> failing <strong>heart</strong> is less tolerant to<br />

such injury. Our results, however, have shown for <strong>the</strong> first<br />

time that <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> ischernia/reoxygenation are similu in<br />

<strong>the</strong> failing and nonfailing myocardium. In addition, we have<br />

also demonstrated for <strong>the</strong> first time that <strong>the</strong> myocardium<br />

from <strong>heart</strong>s exhibiting a LVEF
