An opera buffa, a comedy, a masterpiece
of intrigues, lies and love! 'Il Barbiere di
Siviglia' (The Barber of Seville), an opera
in two acts by Gioachino Rossini, from the
Teatro Regio di Parma.
The production stars Dmitry Korchak as Il
Conte d'Almaviva, Ketevan Kemoklidze as
Rosina, Luca Salsi as Figaro and Giovanni
Furlanetto as Don Basilio.
The aging Doctor Bartolo longs to marry
Rosina, his beautiful and wealthy aid of
the energetic and enterprising barber
Figaro, the Count succeeds in gaining
entry to Bartolo's house disguised first as
a soldier then as a music teacher.
When Bartolo becomes suspicious, he
quickly summons the notary to set the seal
on his marriage to Rosina. But Figaro and
Almaviva are already one step ahead and
the marriage contract is signed by the
Count, who at last reveals his true identity.
Bartolo receives generous compensation,
however: the Count waives the dowry that
Bartolo ought otherwise to have paid as
Rosina's guardian – although he is made
to share the sum with Figaro.
All's well that ends well? We catch up on
the couple's subsequent marriage
problems in the second part of
Beaumarchais' Figaro trilogy, La folle
journee ou le Mariage de Figaro/ One Mad
Day or The Marriage of Figaro, which
Mozart set to music in 1786 under the title
Le nozze di Figaro.

lower-class girl who sleeps her way to
fame and fortune before losing everything
she has and finding death at the hands of
Jack the Ripper.
Conductor Marc Albrecht supports the two
main protagonists, Patricia Petibon's Lulu
and Michael Volle's Dr. Schon, with the
rich sonorities of Berg's music.
Particularly impressive are the gigantic
backdrops that dominate the stage and
were painted by Daniel Richter, one of the
leading German artists of our time.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the
small but ambitious Spanish "Festival
Internacional de Musica Castell de
Peralada", the Catalan theater collective
La Fura dels Baus and its director Carlus
Padrissa have staged Gluck's opera
"Orfeo ed Euridice" with three splendid
female voices and in a production that
wonderfully reflects the Fura's
never-failing imaginativeness.
The most striking aspect of the production
is the direct involvement of the musical
ensemble in the action.
The group, bandArt, is an instrumental
ensemble that performs standing, moving
about or even dancing, on the stage and
without a conductor.
Stage director Padrissa goes so far as to
exclaim: "Like Gluck, who with this opera
opened the doors to the reformation of the
opera 250 years ago, I feel that we are
opening up a new path that will let the
orchestra rise from the pit to incorporate
itself into the action on stage" (Padrissa in
El Pais).
In addition to the visible instrumentalists,
Padrissa also makes abundant stage use
