The investigation begins in the United
States with Robert Provine, a
neuroscientist and psychologist at the
University of Maryland who has devoted
his career to the study of the evolution of
human laughter and the neural
mechanisms that produce it. We follow
Provine into the classroom, the lab, and
finally, the field - in this case, a college
cafeteria - as he explains what his studies
of laughter have revealed about the
human brain.
But laughter did not begin with humans.
The film burrows deeper into its
evolutionary origins with Dutch ethologist
Jan Van Hoof, another pioneer of the
laughter sciences. Van Hoof takes us
inside his chimpanzee observation cabin
to witness his behavioral experiments with
the primates, showing us how he
determined what constitutes chimpanzee
laughter, and how he distinguishes
between different vocalizations and facial
expressions.
From these discipline-defining studies, A
NATURAL HISTORY OF LAUGHTER
expands outwards as Mitsch's scientist
subjects track the broader implications of
their findings. They leave us with a series
of suggestive questions. How do animals
experience emotions? Is laughter at the
root of human empathy? Does laughter
contribute to or indicate overall health?
Prompting these thoughts and many
others, this informative film is bound also
to make you laugh - but not in the ways
you expected.
CURVES
Illustrates the relationship between the
relative positions of free energy curves
and the natures of phase diagrams or
phase transformations. Several cases are
considered: a single-lens diagram, a
maximum in the solidus and liquidus lines
(positive azeotrope), a two-phase eutectic,
a two-phase peritectic, a three-phase
eutectic, and a three-phase peritectic.
Demonstrates applications of the lever
rule and looks at its industrial application
in the iron-carbon and alumina-magnesia
systems that incorporate several of the
transformations.
BINARI BINARIES
Examines the relationship of phase
diagrams to many real cases of materials
technology. The construction of a ternary
system from three binary systems is
animated by computer graphics, and the
projection of the upper curved surfaces
onto the base of the solid model is
explained. Demonstrates that this
projection contains information about
composition, primary phase fields, and
temperature in a given ternary system.
The age of dinosaurs comes alive as
viewers take a trip back in time.
State-of-the-art animatronic dinosaurs
help to create what life was like 60 million
years ago. In this program students will
learn the names and distinctive features of
many of the most common dinosaurs.
They will discover how fossils are formed
and come to understand that fossils can
give us clues about how dinosaurs lived
and died.
REGENERATION
REGENERATION
Regeneration is a documentary film that
follows the studies of scientists as they
explore the possibilities of regenerative
medicine in humans. Computer-generated
images can present an idea of what would
happen if the human body possessed
regenerative capabilities similar to those of
certain animals. An arm grows back after
amputation; a foot regenerates in just a
few days; a head blossoms on the trunk of
a decapitated body. Currently human
embryo research is forbidden, but
alternative research on animal stem cells
is showing that it just may be possible to
adapt the miracle of re-growth to humans.
This one-hour documentary tells the
fascinating story of the search for
Regeneration.
greatly in the different parts of the world.
Students explore how wildlife and the
environment work together in harmony. By
viewing the program and engaging in
activities, viewers will learn to identify and
