BLIND BLIND SPOT: SPOT: WHAT
WHAT
HAPPENED HAPPENED TO TO CANADA'S
CANADA'S
ABORIGINAL ABORIGINAL ABORIGINAL FATHERS?
FATHERS?
It is a fact of life for many Aboriginal
children in this country: their dads are
absent. And if the statistics don't change, a
growing number of First Nations boys will
typically, and tragically, become absent
dads themselves. In contrast to the efforts
being made across the country when it
comes to single Aboriginal mothers, this
fatherlessness is a cycle that very few
Canadians are talking about.
This special report looks at the problem
from a historical context, including the
effect on families of the residential school
system. It also features the efforts of
individuals and organizations in Regina
working to break the cycle.
MI'KMAQ MI'KMAQ WAY, WAY, THE
THE
He's the Conne River Elder who lived the
Mi'kmaq way. A way of life long
abandoned by the Mi'kmaq, but
remembered by John Nick...remembered,
because he was part of it.
John Nick and his those of his generation
ate what the land, and the seasons,
provided. Caribou, salmon...eel, bear
paws, muskrat, caribou
innards...everything was graciously
accepted. Nothing was wasted.
John Nick still has a taste for the foods
that kept him alive as a boy...and many
vivid memories of his months in the
country. But even though he's in tune with
his past, John Nick Jeddore is a man
who's very much kept up with the times...a
man you won't soon forget.
STORIES STORIES FROM FROM THE
THE
RIVER'S RIVER'S EDGE
EDGE
Each year hundreds of Aboriginal students
in Northern Ontario are forced to leave
their families and homes to pursue
something the rest of the country takes for
granted — a high school education. The
fifth estate presents an extremely up-close
and personal look inside the lives of
students and staff at the Dennis Franklin
Cromarty First Nations High School in
Thunder Bay, ON.
Even the school's principal wishes there
were no need for the program his school
offers, that Aboriginal kids could stay in
their own communities to receive a
secondary education. He does not take
lightly that these out-of-town teens have
been entrusted to his care, but it can be
difficult for him to shield his students from
all the temptations of the city. In the past
10 years, seven Aboriginal kids from
Northern Ontario have died in Thunder
Bay, six of them from the DFC High School.
Five of the victims died apparent
alcohol-related deaths — their bodies
were pulled from local rivers amid swirling
suspicions about what pushed them over
the edge. Another two teens suffered
troubling and unexpected deaths that have
left lingering questions.
This documentary tells a story of struggle,
of kids trying to get ahead and of a
remarkable school working under
enormous pressures.
ADDICTIONS
AGE AGE OF OF ANXIETY
ANXIETY
Anxiety. It's being called the disease of the
21st century. Everybody is either
afflicted – or knows someone who is.
According to the World Health
Organization, disorders related to dread
are the most prevalent mental illness on
the globe at the moment.
Some of us shriek at spiders, others have
panic attacks that flare up out of nowhere
and mimic the symptoms of heart failure,
still others worry excessively about
everything and nothing – violent crime,
cancer, black bears, tornadoes.
Is anxiety a disease of modernity? Or is
our highly competitive and material culture
itself undermining our nerves? The Age of
Anxiety examines what anxiety is, and
how and why it is being re-defined by the
medical and pharmaceutical industries.
In 2013, a new edition of the Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM), the psychiatrist's treatment "bible,"
will be released with revised definitions of
anxiety crafted by researchers – often with
ties to drug companies. As the DSM
expands the definitions of anxiety, more
and more people will meet the threshold of
an anxiety disorder. Pharmaceutical
companies have a great deal at stake as
more patients will look to pills for
treatment.
The Age of Anxiety investigates the role
that pharmaceutical companies, and even
the psychiatric profession, play in this
phenomenon. Is our anxiety fueling an
industry that in turn is profiting from and
exploiting our dread in a vicious and
self-perpetuating cycle?
TIME TIME BOMB: BOMB: BOMB: OXYCONTIN
OXYCONTIN
ADDICTION
ADDICTION
Since OxyContin was introduced in 1996,
Canada has recorded the second-highest
number of prescription opioid painkiller
addictions — and the world's
second-highest death rate from overdoses.
But how did this little pill become so big, so
fast? In 1998, Canadian sales were just a
few million dollars, but within 12 years they
had soared to $243 million. In the U.S.,
yearly sales topped $3.5 billion. Though
there were differences in corporate style
and legal structure between Purdue in the
U.S and in Canada, a similar marketing
approach proved wildly successful. The
fifth estate examines why medical schools,
GPs and specialists in pain clinics readily
embraced the drug at first, and why some
have now changed their minds.
STARLING
With Lee Brimelow
Join Lee Brimelow in this project-style
course that teaches how to build a
Flash-based game with Flash Builder 4.6,
Flash Player 11, and the Starling
framework. Starling, a pure ActionScript
3.0 library for advanced graphics, extends
Flash Player 11's support for the modern
GPU (graphic processing unit) to enable
visual presentations and games in the
browser or as a mobile app.
Starting with installation and configuration
of Starling and creation of a Flash Builder
project, the course shows how to prepare
and import graphical assets, create
MovieClip classes from sprite sheets,
manage various gaming objects, detect
collisions, and add both particle and sound
effects. The finished game can be
deployed to any browser or mobile device
