But above all he is the man who, thanks to
his incredible energy, kindles a sacred
flame whose rays transfix not only the
general public but his performers as well.
This film portrait thus attempts to capture
all these facets via interviews, concerts,
and above all rehearsals which lead us
from the Bach Cantatas to Beethoven's
9th Symphony.
PROKOFIEV: PROKOFIEV: THE
THE
UNFI UNFINISHED UNFI NISHED DIARY
DIARY
All that is certain about Sergei Prokofiev is
that he was a musical genius and one of
the greatest composers of the 20th
Century.
With the discovery of his personal diaries,
the mystery that was Prokofiev is about to
be revealed. Prokofiev fled Russia shortly
after the Bolshevik Revolution. He spent
the next eighteen years trying to build a
successful career in North America and
Europe. Then, he made a decision which
stunned the world: he returned to Russia
in 1936, at the height of the Stalinist
purges.
Now more than fifty years after his death,
this documentary reveals the largely
untold story about the pivotal eighteen
years (1918-1936) outside Russia, the
years which sealed his fate.
Through the intimate, revealing and often
heartbreaking words of Prokofiev's diaries,
the film investigates Prokofiev's life and art
through his own words and the prism of
some of his most extraordinary musical
creations.
RENAISSANCE RENAISSANCE VOICES:
VOICES:
INTERPRETED INTERPRETED BY BY PAUL
PAUL
VAN VAN NEVEL
NEVEL
Paul Van Nevel shares the melancholia
and earthy tastes of the Renaissance and
has been performing the music of the
period for many years.
He combs libraries for forgotten
compositions and insists on reading the
original scores, finding nuances which
guide his interpretations.
But he is also insatiably curious about the
concrete realities of Renaissance life.
He takes us back to a world in which time
moved more slowly, although lives were
shorter, and the dead kept watch over the
living, where dreams held sway and
children saw mountains and marvels
wherever they looked, when the age of
exploration was still dawning and the
'landscape' still taking shape.
When Van Nevel contemplates the
Franco-Flemish landscapes into which all
the great contrapuntists were born, he
sees their compositions reflected.
Through him the hills and valleys suddenly
start to sing Gombert, Manchicourt or
Lassus and we become once more the
dreamers of another age.
THE THE THE BATTLE BATTLE FOR FOR A A LIV LIVING LIV ING
PL PLANET PL
ANET
Directed by Mark Kitchell
The documentary of record on the
environmental movement.
A FIERCE GREEN FIRE: The Battle For a
Living Planet is the first big-picture
exploration of the environmental
movement - grassroots and global
activism spanning fifty years from
conservation to climate change. From
halting dams in the Grand Canyon to
battling 20,000 tons of toxic waste at Love
Canal; from Greenpeace saving the
whales to Chico Mendes and the
rubbertappers saving the Amazon; from
climate change to the promise of
transforming our civilization... the film tells
vivid stories about people fighting - and
succeeding - against enormous odds.
The film is divided into five "acts".
Act 1 focuses on the conservation
movement of the `60s, David Brower and
the Sierra Club's battle to halt dams in the
Grand Canyon.
Act 2 looks at the new environmental
movement of the `70s with its emphasis on
pollution, focusing on the battle led by Lois
Gibbs over Love Canal.
Act 3 is about alternative ecology strands
and the main story is Greenpeace's
campaign to save the whales.
Act 4 explores global resource issues and
crises of the `80s, focusing on the struggle
to save the Amazon led by Chico Mendes
and the rubber tappers.
Act 5 concerns climate change.
inclusive documentary film on the rise
of modern environmentalism." - Paul
Sutter, Associate Professor of History,
University of Colorado
incredibly dynamic film. It's shaping
up to be the documentary of record on
the environmental movement. I think
it'll be hugely successful." - Cara
Mertes, Director, Sundance Institute
Documentary Film Program
"The film left me emotionally drained
and profoundly hopeful." - Bruce
Barcott, OnEarth Magazine
