the women's title, losing out to Marion

The Serb outclassed the Spaniard to
prevail 6-2, 6-3, l-6, 6-4. It was Djokovic's
third Grand Slam title and first on the
grass of SW19.

Novak Djokovic underlined his new status
as the world's top tennis player in 2011 by
shattering Rafael Nadal's winning streak
at Wimbledon to add his own name to the
roll of honour at The Championships for
the first time.
The 24-year-old Serb, with his country's
president watching from the Royal Box,
won 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in two hours 28
minutes to continue his domination of the
2011 season - and Nadal in particular -
throughout this most amazing season in
his career.
Five times in succession he has now
defeated the Spaniard in finals, but none
were as important or will taste as sweet as
this.
Tipped to create an upset at the 2011
Championships, few saw Petra Kvitova
wining 6-3, 6-4 in one hour 25 minutes.
Although Maria Sharapova's play fell well
below her best levels, it was in no small
part due to the big-hitting torrent directed
at her by the 21-year-old whose first, but
surely not last, Grand Slam victory this
was.

As the last major of the calendar year, the
US Open annually brings down the curtain
on the Grand Slam season with some of
the most unforgettable matches in tennis
history.
In 2012, it featured a marquee finale
pitting the defending champion Novak
Djokovic, pursuing his fourth straight
hard-court Grand Slam title, against
reigning Olympic champion Andy Murray,
looking for his first Grand Slam title in his
fifth Slam final.
The two men entered the match with much
in common. They were born one week
apart in 1987 and grew up as junior rivals
and subsequently as Top 5 players, each
initially sitting just outside the top level set
by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. But
where Djokovic broke through with a
transcendent 2011, Murray was still
fighting to capture his first major crown.
The Scotsman posted his biggest career
victory earlier in the summer, taking the
gold medal at the Summer Olympic
Games, and was hoping to translate that
into a victory in Flushing Meadows.
Djokovic, however, had no designs on
relinquishing his title, hoping to add it to
the Australian Open championship he won
earlier in the year and the three majors he
captured in 2011.
The result would be one of the most
memorable men's singles finals of the
Open Era.

In the Ladies' Singles Maria Sharapova
arrived at SW19 as the world No.1 while
Petra Kvitova was defending her title and
Venus Williams was in search of a sixth
Wimbledon singles title. Andy Murray once
again carried the hopes of the home
nation and made history by becoming the
first Briton to reach the Gentlemen's
Singles final since Bunny Austin in 1938.
There was more history made in the
Gentlemen's Doubles when the wild card
entry of Frederik Nielsen from Denmark
and Britain's Jonathan Marray won the title,
with Marray becoming the first Briton to
win the title for 76 years.
In the Ladies' Singles final Serena
Williams captured her fifth title defeating
Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, who was
playing in her first Grand Slam final.
In the Gentlemen's Singles final Roger
Federer secured his seventh Wimbledon
title beating Andy Murray.
His victory equalled the tally of Pete
Sampras in the Open Era and William
Renshaw a century earlier.

The Wimbledon 2012 Men's Singles final
was always going to be a historic final,
regardless of the result.
On one side of the net, Andy Murray, the
first British man to reach a Wimbledon
Singles final in 74 years and vying to
become the first British champion since
Fred Perry in 1936. But on the other side
of the net loomed one of the greatest
players of all time, Roger Federer, who,
should he win, would equal Pete Sampras'
record of seven Wimbledon Men's Singles
titles.
The Wimbledon 2012 Ladies' Final saw
Serena Williams take on Agnieszka
Radwanska. Radwanska made her first
appearance in a Grand Slam Final and
became the first Polish woman to reach
the Wimbledon Ladies' final in 75 years.
On Center Court Williams raced to a 5-0
lead, on her way to winning the first set 6-1.
After a short rain delay, Williams was
quickly back into her stride taking a 3-1
lead and it looked on course to be one of
the shortest Ladies' Finals in Wimbledon
history. But then Radwanska rediscovered
her form and the 23 year old broke back
twice to win the set 7-5, in front of a vocal
crowd.
The third and deciding set began evenly,
but Williams broke at 3-2 and didn't look
back, breaking again and taking the set
6-2 to claim her 14th Grand Slam Singles
title and her first in two years.
