ARCHAEOLOGY
6 6 GENERATIONS
GENERATIONS
By Paul Goldsmith
Ernestine De Soto is a Chumash Native
American whose mother Mary Yee was
the last speaker of her native Barbareno
language. In 6 Generations, her family
reaches back to the days the Spanish
arrived in Santa Barbara and made first
contact. Ernestine tells this history from
the perspective of her female ancestors,
making her a unique link with the past.
Famous anthropologist John Peabody
Harrington, whose work focused on native
peoples of California, started research
with her family in 1913 and continued with
three generations for nearly 50 years. This
inspired Ernestine's mother to begin taking
notes and, combined with mission records
(which survived intact from the late 1700s),
they form the heart of this story. Because
of these circumstances, her story, possible
only in California, is unique in America.
The impact of loss of land, language,
culture and life itself is made all the more
clear as this story is told in Native
American voices, who describe the events
as they experienced them. Ultimately, it is
a story of survival and the fierce
endurance of Ernestine's ancestors,
particularly the women.
Review
 "This is history as autobiography,
foregrounding the power of language
and telling a checkered tale of cultural
survival in the extreme. The time
depth is simply astonishing, and the
narrative is frank and true and
sometimes stark. 6 Generations is a
home run. I cannot recommend it
highly enough." - David Hurst Thomas,
DREAMING
DREAMING DREAMING OF A TREE
HOUSE: HOUSE: FREI FREI OTTO'S
OTTO'S
ECOLOGICAL ECOLOGICAL PROJECT PROJECT IIN
I N
BERLIN
BERLIN
By Beate Lendt
DREAMING OF A TREE HOUSE is a film
about the pioneering community-building
project of the world-famous architect Frei
Otto in Berlin, called the Okohaus—an
experimental, ecological, customized
housing project in the city center.
Including interviews with Frei Otto,
Christine Kanstinger-Otto, Hermann
Kendel, Yona Friedman, Anne Lacaton &
Jean-Philippe Vassal, and other involved
architects, planners, and inhabitants, the
film shows the development and the
philosophy of the project, which was built
for the International Building Exhibition in
Berlin 1987 (IBA).
The "Ecohouse" project hosts a number of
experimental solutions to adaptable home
building and personalization. The film
explores the ideas that motivated the
project, its underlying sustainability
themes, and asks how these ambitions
were realized.
DREAMING OF A TREE HOUSE
ultimately asks: What can we learn from
the Okohaus? How can its design, building
process, and the experience of its 20-plus
year occupation inform ecological and
design issues currently relevant to our
society?
CALDER: CALDER: CALDER: SCULPTOR SCULPTOR OF
AIR AIR
AIR
Unique modern artist Alexander Calder
(1898-1976) revolutionized the art of
sculpture with his distinctive modernism,
freeing sculpture from its stand and adding
movement to the art itself.
He rose to fame in the 1930s with his
renowned Miniature Circus, but his
modernist creativity skyrocketed with his
wire sculptures, an invention he dubbed
"drawing in space".
Contemporary and friend with Duchamp,
Miro, and Mondrian, who have greatly
influenced his evolution, this genius
tinkerer, too often limited to his Mobiles,
was fueled by artistic renewal, creating
such unexpected shapes as his huge
stabile sculptures now exhibited
