This tribute to Jerome Robbins was
recorded at the Paris Opera in 2008 with
three pieces by Robbins, and one by
up-and-coming choreographer Benjamin
Millepied. En Sol (In the Sun ) suggests a
sun-drenched beach where the dancers
are having fun cavorting to the "jazzy
overtones of Ravel's Piano Concerto in ?G.
Triade shows a meeting of four people and
thei interrelatedness. In the Night,
choreographed to Chopin's Nocturnes,
presents three couples who personify
three phases of love under a starry sky.
The Concert, Ou les malheurs de chacun
(or The Perils of Everybody) is a comedy
inspired by the silent movie series "The
Perils of Pauline" and a satire of classical
ballet.

In 1945 seven-year-old Joe Eggmolesse
was diagnosed with Leprosy. He was
taken from his family under police escort
and transported by rail and sea over a
thousand kilometres to Fantome Island
where he was to be incarcerated for the
next ten years.
The isolated tropical island off the North
Queensland coast became home to a
close-knit community of indigenous
"lepers" whose marginalized existence
was hidden from white society and has
until now remained absent from the
mainstream historical record. Cared for by
nuns from the Franciscan Missionaries of
Mary their isolation was the consequence
of apartheid-like policies developed by the
Queensland government and medical
establishment which espoused a
eugenicist philosophy and regarded racial
segregation as standard practice.
As one of the few surviving former patients
Joe returns to the island for a long awaited
event, the Fantome Island Remembrance
Day. As a 73 year old Elder he confronts
the memory of his childhood on the island
to pay tribute to those who lived and died
there and to inscribe his own unique story
into official Australian history. Drawing on
an evocative archive, this film exposes
how an ideology of racism and eugenics
worked to justify horrific treatment of
Australia's Indigenous communities. In
uncovering this shameful history, Fantome
Island is a testimony of strength and
endurance, demonstrating one man's
incredible capacity for forgiveness and
love.

For how long have we been laughing? Are
human beings the only ones to laugh? In
the past, scientists tended to neglect such
questions of laughter, leaving them to the
philosophers. Jacques Mitsch's A
NATURAL HISTORY OF LAUGHTER
explores recent scientific attempts to
explicate this most elusive of human
faculties, undertaken by scientists who
see it as a means of approaching some of
the larger mysteries of neurology and
human behavior.
The investigation begins in the United
States with Robert Provine, a
neuroscientist and psychologist at the
University of Maryland who has devoted
his career to the study of the evolution of
human laughter and the neural
mechanisms that produce it. We follow
Provine into the classroom, the lab, and
finally, the field - in this case, a college
cafeteria - as he explains what his studies
of laughter have revealed about the
human brain.
But laughter did not begin with humans.
The film burrows deeper into its
evolutionary origins with Dutch ethologist
Jan Van Hoof, another pioneer of the
laughter sciences. Van Hoof takes us
inside his chimpanzee observation cabin
