these cities, cloisters and churches of the
"Golden Ring" that the heart of Russia
used to beat - until the October Revolution.
Now, after over 70 years, the bells can be
heard chiming regularly once again, and
the remaining cloisters and churches
radiate their former splendor.
This enlightening program visits the
fascinating towns of Moscow's "Golden
Ring." One unique town, Susdal, could be
a city from a Russian fairy tale. In the
Middle Ages it was one of the most
important cities far and wide, larger than
Paris or London - now it has been
relegated to depths of a Russian
backwater. Yet it is a typical Russian city
with a Kremlin, churches, palaces and
fortified cloisters, which defended the
Orthodox faith at first against the Islamic
Mongols, later against the Catholic
Swedes. This informative and entertaining
program was filmed entirely on location
and shows the many changes that have
taken place since the collapse of the
Soviet Union.
THE THE THE GODS
GODS
In Kumbakonom, according to an ancient
myth, the world evolved from a "kumba", a
vessel.
The city in the south of India claims to be
the navel of the world, which, according to
the Hindu creed, is actually the sacred city
of Benares.
This is one of the numerous contradictions
which are a particular characteristic of the
south of India, where myths, religious
traditions and everyday life are entwined
in what appears to be a hopelessly tangled
web.
Yet, in fact, everything does have an inner
Indian logic, a cohesion derived and
based on thousand-year-old stories of the
gods and their worlds.
This background explains the mysterious
temple and also the fate of an old woman,
who dedicated her life to the gods.
EUROPE
A window to Europe was what Peter the
Great wanted to create when, in 1703, he
laid the foundation stone for the new
capital city of his Russian empire. He sent
50,000 serfs into the swampy delta of the
Neva to pound the harbor city out of the
ground.
Under Katharina the Great, St Petersburg
finally became the thriving metropolis
which Peter the Great had dreamed of: a
"Venice of the North", a city of the arts, the
sciences and literature.
Many artists, craftsmen, scientists and
philosophers from Europe responded to
the Tsarina's summons to come east.
They brought with them new ideas, which
they then blended with the old eastern
traditions.
A cultural center emerged, quite
unparalleled in the west.
MEGALITHIC
CULTURES
Some 5,000 monuments have been
preserved from the Neolithic Age. They
testify to a culture which left no written
evidence and whose religious ideals are
obscured by a veil of conjecture.
Numerous unsolved questions still
fascinate people, as do the huge dolmens
and menhirs, the burial mounds and stone
circles. They create for us a society which
was capable of great feats.
This informative program focuses on
Stonehenge, the symbol of megalithic
culture, and investigates the relationship
of space, power and death, essential to
any understanding of this unique
monument.
CULTURES CULTURES - TEOTIHUACAN:
TEOTIHUACAN:
CITY CITY OF OF THE THE GODS
GODS
As with many of the pre-Spanish
civilizations of Central and South America
there are more questions than answers
surrounding the culture of Teotihuacan.
From village communities, at around 200
BC, there developed an urban civilization
in the highlands of Mexico. Over the
centuries it produced huge, precisely
constructed pyramids for cultic purposes.
In the 8th century AD Teotihuacan suffered
a catastrophic collapse. At its zenith this
now legendary ruined city extended over
20 square kilometers and was thus larger
than Imperial Rome.
Nobody knows what language its
inhabitants spoke, or what people they
belonged to. No writing has been found,
nor has the name of any ruler.
The film follows the traces of a forgotten
society and contrasts them with the
surviving Indian traditions of present-day
Mexico.
ESCORIAL: ESCORIAL: ESCORIAL: THE THE THE DREAM DREAM DREAM OF OF
OF
A A DEVOUT DEVOUT DEVOUT MONARCH
MONARCH
MONARCH
It was to be a bulwark of the faith, a
symbol of the greatness and power of the
Spanish world empire.
In a manner virtually unparalleled by any
other building, the Escorial reflects the
spirit of its age, the 16th century, and of its
patron, Philipp II. Philipp II, driven by a
blind faith in the Catholic Church and the
burning desire to emulate his father,
Charles V, had the Escorial built in a bleak,
deserted landscape. From this remote
vantage point he wanted to rule the world.
The architecture is a perfect reflection of
this spirit, externally an austere building
almost entirely without ornamentation.
It is, moreover, no coincidence that the
building is reminiscent of a cloister; part of
which is still used today as a monastry.
And it was from this fortified cloister that
Philipp sought the solution to one of the
most intractable problems of his time - the
schism in the church. He resorted to the
means of the Inquisition.
The building, and its whole style, exudes
the relentlessness with which Philipp
exerted his power.
