about the pioneering community-building
project of the world-famous architect Frei
Otto in Berlin, called the Okohaus—an
experimental, ecological, customized
housing project in the city center.
Including interviews with Frei Otto,
Christine Kanstinger-Otto, Hermann
Kendel, Yona Friedman, Anne Lacaton &
Jean-Philippe Vassal, and other involved
architects, planners, and inhabitants, the
film shows the development and the
philosophy of the project, which was built
for the International Building Exhibition in
Berlin 1987 (IBA).
The "Ecohouse" project hosts a number of
experimental solutions to adaptable home
building and personalization. The film
explores the ideas that motivated the
project, its underlying sustainability
themes, and asks how these ambitions
were realized.
DREAMING OF A TREE HOUSE
ultimately asks: What can we learn from
the Okohaus? How can its design, building
process, and the experience of its 20-plus
year occupation inform ecological and
design issues currently relevant to our
society?
THE THE BATTLE BATTLE FOR FOR A A LIV LIVING LIV ING
PLANET
PLANET
Directed by Mark Kitchell
The documentary of record on the
environmental movement.
A FIERCE GREEN FIRE: The Battle For a
Living Planet is the first big-picture
exploration of the environmental
movement - grassroots and global
activism spanning fifty years from
conservation to climate change. From
halting dams in the Grand Canyon to
battling 20,000 tons of toxic waste at Love
Canal; from Greenpeace saving the
whales to Chico Mendes and the
rubbertappers saving the Amazon; from
climate change to the promise of
transforming our civilization... the film tells
vivid stories about people fighting - and
succeeding - against enormous odds.
The film is divided into five "acts".
Act 1 focuses on the conservation
movement of the `60s, David Brower and
the Sierra Club's battle to halt dams in the
Grand Canyon.
Act 2 looks at the new environmental
movement of the `70s with its emphasis on
pollution, focusing on the battle led by Lois
Gibbs over Love Canal.
Act 3 is about alternative ecology strands
and the main story is Greenpeace's
campaign to save the whales.
Act 4 explores global resource issues and
crises of the `80s, focusing on the struggle
to save the Amazon led by Chico Mendes
and the rubber tappers.
Act 5 concerns climate change.
Reviews
 "The most thorough, expansive, and
inclusive documentary film on the rise
of modern environmentalism." - Paul
Sutter, Associate Professor of History,
University of Colorado
"The material is vast, and it's an
incredibly dynamic film. It's shaping
up to be the documentary of record on
the environmental movement. I think
it'll be hugely successful." - Cara
Mertes, Director, Sundance Institute
Documentary Film Program
"The film left me emotionally drained
and profoundly hopeful." - Bruce
Barcott, OnEarth Magazine
2011 2011 US US OPEN OPEN MEN'S
MEN'S
FINAL: FINAL: NADAL NADAL VS
DJOKOVIC
DJOKOVIC
The US Open began in 1881 as the U.S.
Championships, a relatively small event
held at The Casino in Newport, R.I. Today
it has grown into the biggest tennis
tournament in the world, with a long, rich
tradition of attracting the best players from
around the globe to perform on the world's
greatest stage: the USTA Billie Jean King
National Tennis Center in New York City.
As the last major of the calendar year, the
US Open annually brings down the curtain
on the Grand Slam season with some of
the most unforgettable matches in tennis
history. In 2011, it featured another
bruising battle between the best player of
2010 (Rafael Nadal) and the best player of
2011 (Novak Djokovic) competing in the
first repeat men's singles final since Ivan
Lendl and Mats Wilander in 1987-88 and
the first featuring the top two seeds since
Pete Sampras defeated Michael Chang in
1996.
A year earlier Nadal knocked off Djokovic
in four sets to win his first US Open
championship and complete the career
Grand Slam. But Djokovic had turned the
tables in 2011, defeating Nadal all five
times they played—all in finals. A victory
for Nadal, the reigning French Open
champion, would give him a split of the
year's four Grand Slam events and tie him
with Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver for fourth
all-time with 11 Grand Slam tournament
titles. A victory for Djokovic would give him
his first US Open title, make him just the
sixth man in the Open Era to win three
Grand Slam tournaments in a single
season and run his record on the year to
an incomparable 64-2.
