born with imagination, work hard to build a
knowledge toolbox, and are able to
develop the attitude that problems can be
solved. But our business structures must
build unrestrictive habitats that set the
stage for creativity, provide the resources
to get things done and, lastly, support a
culture that sees small failures as a source
of data and rewards the courage to try
PERFORMANCE
JATHILAN: JATHILAN: TRANCE TRANCE AND
AND
POSSESSION POSSESSION IN IN JAVA
JAVA
By Robert Lemelson
Practiced in Java for centuries, Jathilan is
a folk dance that uses the power of music
and dance to channel powerful and
sometimes terrifying forces. Led by a
spiritual guide and a whip-bearing
ringleader, a group of dancers ride woven
horses in rhythmic unison until they are
entered by spirits. Once possessed they
engage in a range of self-mortification
behaviors until safely emerging from their
altered state, left with no memory of the
event and no lingering ill effects.
The film combines footage of a number of
Jathilan performances with interviews with
dancers, spiritual leaders, anthropologists,
and enthusiasts. This extraordinary
practice becomes more than just
spectacle as Jathilan is contextualized
within broader processes of Indonesian
historical, political and social change and
the viewer is provided a window into the
subjective experiences of those who
participate. Multiple interpretations of
Jathilan's significance ultimately emerge,
from an empirical proof of spiritual
presence, to a strategy of community
building, to a resistant expression of folk
identity.
LIFESPAN
LIFESPAN
This video reviews general understanding
of basic concepts of human growth and
development by looking at how physical,
cognitive, and psychomotor development
influences pharmacotherapeutics. The
lecture goes on matching the pregnancy
categories with their definitions and
outlines the importance of teaching the
breastfeeding mother about prescription
and OTC drug use, as well as the use of
herbal products. Students learn
physiological and biochemical changes
that occur in the older adult, and how
these affect pharmacotherapy; the nursing
and pharmacologic implications
associated with each of the following
developmental age groups: prenatal
period, infancy, toddlerhood, preschoolers,
school-age children, adolescence, young
adults, middle-age adults, and older
adults.
DRUG DRUG CLASSES CLASSES AND
SCHEDULES
SCHEDULES
SCHEDULES
This video covers the basis for placing
drugs into therapeutic and
pharmacological classes and the
prototype approach to drug classification.
It describes drug's mechanism of action,
distinguishes between a drug's chemical
name, generic name, and trade name, and
explains why generic drug names are
preferred to other trade name drugs.
Students learn why drugs are sometimes
placed on a restrictive list and the
controversy surrounding this issue and
"controlled substance" category. The video
lecture explores the U.S. Controlled
Substance Act of 1970 and the role of the
U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency in
controlling drug abuse and misuse and the
drug schedules and examples of drugs at
each level together with explanations on
how drugs are scheduled according to
Parts III and IV of the Canadian Food and
Drugs Act and the Narcotic Control Act.
SYSTEM
This lecture reviews the fundamental
divisions of the nervous system, primary
functions, actions of the sympathetic and
parasympathetic nervous systems. It
explains the process of synaptic
transmission and the neurotransmitters
important to the autonomic nervous
system and the types of responses that
occur when a drug activates Alpha-1 (α1),
Alpha-2 (α2), Beta-1 (β1), or Beta-2
(β2)–adrenergic receptors. The video
lecture describes the nurse's role in the
pharmacological management of patients
receiving medications affecting the
autonomic nervous system. For each of
the drug classes listed in Drugs At A
Glance, student should be able to explain
the mechanism of drug action, primary
actions, and important adverse effects and
the nursing process to care for patients
receiving parasympathomimetics,
anticholinergics, sympathomimetics, and
adrenergic-blockers.
This video looks at the relationship
between atherosclerosis and coronary
supply to the myocardium. It explains the
pathophysiology of angina pectoris,
myocardial infarction, and cerebrovascular
accident (commonly known as stroke) and
the nurse's role in the pharmacological
management of patients with angina,
myocardial infarction, and cerebrovascular
accident. For each of the drug classes
listed in Drugs at a Glance, it explains the
mechanism of drug action, primary actions,
and important adverse effects. This lecture
attempts to categorize drugs used in the
treatment of angina, myocardial infarction,
and cerebrovascular accident based on
their classifications and mechanisms of
