Furze Hill, near Pirbright Common, Surrey<br />

Altitude 54 m. Peaty, mesotrophic pond with white<br />

water-lily and broadleaved pondweed, and<br />

marginal bulrush, rushes, bog-myrtle and<br />

Sphagnum, surrounded by Scots pine, birch and<br />

sallow. Site for Ceriagrion tenellum, Erythromma<br />

najas, Aeshna grandis, A. cyanea, Cordulia aenea<br />

and Somatochlora metallica.<br />

August 1987<br />

Altitude 90 m. Shallow spring-fed<br />

gravelly runnel emanating from<br />

underlying calcareous sandstone<br />

in heathland dominated by<br />

heather and western gorse, with<br />

scattered Scots pine and birch.<br />

The margins support black bogrush,<br />

purple moor-grass and<br />

rushes, and boggy areas contain<br />

Sphagnum and round-leaved<br />

sundews. This and the following<br />

locality are sites for Coenagrion<br />

mercuriale, Pyrrhosoma<br />

nymphula, Cordulegaster boltonii<br />

and Orthetrum coerulescens.<br />

Altitude 145 m. Spring-fed runnel<br />

over marl, containing marsh St<br />

John's-wort, bog pondweed and<br />

marginal Sphagnum species, in<br />

an area of sheep-grazed heath<br />

dominated by purple moor-grass,<br />

heather and bilberry.<br />

Altitude 216 m. Shallow pool in old china clay<br />

workings, resulting from the silting up of a settling<br />

pond, with emergent common cottongrass, soft<br />

rush, unbranched bur-reed, floating sweet-grass<br />

and lesser spearwort. Site for Ischnura pumilio,<br />

elegans, Lestes sponsa, Libellula guadrimaculata<br />

and L. depressa.<br />
