EBAY ERSTEIGERT: Ein komplettes<br />
Feuerschiff, 128 Fuß lang, 600 Tonnen<br />
schwer, Baujahr 1950 – das vorletzte<br />
Feuerschiff, das in den Vereinigten Staaten<br />
gebaut wurde. Im Jahr 2000 wäre es<br />
um ein Haar verschrottet worden. Erst<br />
wollte es der Staat Massachusetts, der das<br />
Schiff bis dahin als Museum betrieben<br />
hatte, abwracken. Auf den Protest vieler<br />
Bürger hin wurde es dann bei eBay versteigert<br />
– wo ausgerechnet Schrottfirmen<br />
auf das Schiff boten, allein das Steuerhaus<br />
aus Messing stellt einen nicht unerheblichen<br />
Wert dar. Erst 20 Minuten vor<br />
Schluss der Auktion sprang Bill Golden<br />
ein und erhielt, für 126.000 Dollar, den<br />
Zuschlag: Der Anwalt aus Boston arbeitete<br />
nach einem von ihm selbst ausgeklügelten<br />
System, das er hier nicht verraten<br />
möchte: „Wenn andere es kennen, funktioniert<br />

lightship, 128 feet and 600 tons, built in<br />
1950 – the last-but-one lightship that was<br />
constructed in the United States. In 2000<br />
it was very nearly scrapped. First, the state<br />
of Massachusetts, which had up to then<br />
ran the ship as a museum, wanted to get<br />
rid of it. Only after the protests of many<br />
residents was the ship instead offered for<br />
auction on eBay. However, it was mainly<br />
scrapyards that placed bids for the ship;<br />
the brass in the bridge house alone was<br />
worth a small fortune. Just 20 minutes<br />
before the auction closed, Bill Golden<br />
jumped on board bought the vessel for<br />
126,000 dollars. The Boston attorney was<br />
working with a self-devised system that<br />
he does not wish to disclose: »As soon as<br />
anyone else knows about it, it won’t work<br />
