circuit that sparked and triggered the flames. Thanks to the
quick arrival of the fire brigade, it was »only« the main hall
building, two smaller ships and an American motor sailer that
were destroyed. The latter was rebuilt at the express request of
the owner, virtually from the ashes.
Other challenges were more fundamental. After the death
of Henry Rasmussen, there was no longer a talented in-house
designer. However, thanks to the good contacts of Schaedla
and Rasmussen in the United States, many yachts by American
designers (and for U.S. customers) were built in the years that
followed. The designers included famous names such as Philip
Rhodes and Olin Stephens, but also Dick Carter – a radical
outsider at that time. By the 1970s, Abeking & Rasmussen had
built many yachts, but also an increasing number of navy and
commercial vessels. This was the time when Hans was growing
up, and it gave birth to his passion and enthusiasm for yachts.
»As a young boy, I thought it was great to wander around the
complex, to play in the timber yard and breathe in the wonderful
smell of freshly cut mahogany,« he recalls. »Later, I was
given weights and rulers and was allowed to trace and draw the
lines of yachts. I used to enjoy doing this so much!«
jUST LIKE SAILING, EVIDENTLY. In 1968, a small »series«
of five yachts was built at A & R, designed by Dick
Carter. The fifth was for Hans’s father. This was Indigo, hull
number 6311, Hans recalls from memory, »a self-built yacht.«
In the following decades, the yacht was sailed extensively and
only overhauled at the shipyard. »She was out of action for
four years, and we had to really do some major work,« says
Hans. »The yacht was always sailed hard in all her races.
Last spring she was finally finished. We could sail her again,
and I really wanted to go on another cruise with my father,
but it never came to pass. Since then I’ve had so many other
