She is quite simply the most interesting 15 metre
ever. Designed and built by Charles Nicholson in
1912, she had some revolutionary features. She was
the first yacht with a Marconi mainmast where the
topsail is not set on a separate jack-yard hoisted from
deck, but on a track on the mast that extends to the
full height of the topsail. Nicholson also invented
for her the “dinghy cockpit”, again saving weight

and windage: Instead of carrying a dinghy on deck
as the class rules required, he designed a dinghy that
was “sunk” into the main deck and also served as the
cockpit. Istria had 72 wins out of 81 starts but was
broken up in Norway in 1924. The 15 Metre Class is
now substantially revived with the prospect of four
yachts racing (Tuiga, Hispania, Mariska and the
Lady Anne).
