Auch Yachten können als SWATH-Schiffe gebaut werden //
Yachts can also be built as SWATH ships
as a boatbuilder with his grandfather in Germany but was then
called up for military service and returned to America, where
he enlisted in the navy. He later worked aboard a destroyer in
the Pacific and reached the rank of lieutenant. The news that
his inheritance had made him the main shareholder of a shipyard
in faraway Germany caught him rather off-guard, but he
went to Bremen. Here he realised that he »could, should and
had to take over the shipyard,« his son Hans today explains.
Hans Schaedla was born in Lemwerder. He virtually grew up
at the shipyard, while his father Hermann was busy learning by
doing in order to master the business. After all, as manager of a
boatyard with almost 700 employees at the time, he had to learn
quickly, and often the hard way. His son Hans was just a month
old when, on 13 May 1962, the business went up in flames.
In February, there had been a huge storm surge that broke the
dykes in Hamburg, and the rescue operations that followed
were to make Interior Minister Helmut Schmidt famous. In
Bremen, the scale of the floods was less dramatic, but parts
of the yard were inevitably left below water. After the boatyard
fire, it was established that the cause was damage to the
electrics during the floods, which eventually produced a short
swath-schiffe
SWATH steht für »Small Waterplane Area Twin
Hull«. Dahinter verbirgt sich ein innovatives Rumpfkonzept
für optimale Manövrier- und Fahreigenschaften
bei rauer See.
