12-MetRe Yacht fRoM 1962 aMeRica’s cup
This is a true piece of yachting history! The 12-metre
“Gretel” was challenger for the America’s Cup in
1962 and the first Australian 12 ever. The challenge
of Sir Frank Packer and “Gretel” was a dangerous
one for the Americans, the races against the defender
“Weatherly” very close. The Australians won the race
on 18th September 1962, the first time since 1934
that the Americans had lost a Cup race. The final
YACHTS
score of four to one races for “Weatherly” does not
reflect how exciting the racing really was. Magazines
all over the world identified “Gretel” as the faster boat
and saw the Americans just winning due to the greater
efficiency of the crew and greater experience. We
have now found her in Italy and will restore her to her
original condition to preserve this important piece of
yachting history for the next generations.
