The Vander Veer Botanical
Park and Conservatory in
Davenport, Iowa, is a wonderful
place to stroll around in
any season, especially in the
fall during the Chrysanthemum
Festival. Hundreds of colorful
mums adorn the park
and brighten somewhat dreary
November days.
Established in 1885, the
Vander Veer Botanical Park and
Conservatory was believed to be
the first botanical garden west of
the Mississippi River. The park
was modeled after Central Park
in New York and called Central
Park until 1921, when it was
renamed Vander Veer Botanical
Park and Conservatory after the
first secretary of the Davenport
Park Commissioners.
The 33-acre botanical park
includes working greenhouses
