El cormorán moñudo en Españagenerations in Galicia. In particular, a population decrement by 60% in lessthan a generation has been identified in the Cíes-Ons Archipelago, which hoststhe main breeding nuclei for the species. The main factors triggering this declineseem to have been, on the one hand, a high mortality rate due to by-catchin fishing grids and, on the other hand, the effects derived from the «Prestige»oil spill. The population trend for the nominal subspecies led to its classification as«endangered» in the last update of the Red Data Book for Spanish birds. Thiscategory has been further confirmed following the census presented in thisbook. Besides, provided the large recovery identified for the desmarestii subspeciesis ascertained, the census results for the Mediterranean population suggestthe need to revise the classification of its conservation status. However, it is advisednot to change the current category, since the marked trend shift may be theresult of some mistake, either in past or in the most recent censuses. Therefore,it is strongly recommended that the species’conservation status remains as classifiedin the last edition of the Red Data Book for Spanish birds (i.e.“Vulnerable”), at least until future censuses help ensure its actual status.72
