Agave grows since 12 million years in clayey and<br />

volcanic soils, in hot and dry weathers. It is one of the<br />

most ancient and native species of Mesoamerica.<br />

The dry weather of San Miguel is proper for the growth<br />

of this wild crop and its industrial crop of three kind of<br />

agave, two of them abundant Agave acuispina y Agave<br />

letonae. Letonae Trelease variety is raised industrially in<br />

this area to produce natural fibers and elaborate bags,<br />

lasso, and other by-products of the fiber which supply<br />

the local and international market.<br />

The “agave” contributed to the industrialization of<br />

Salvadorean agriculture, especially along all the 20th<br />

Century. It was one of the products which stood in the<br />

international market during World War II. Nowadays, it<br />

keeps its importance for the packaging of products like<br />

coffee, cacao, vegetables and grains, and it continues<br />

to generate traditional employment that conserves an<br />

ancestral crop.
