Agave grows since 12 million years in clayey and
volcanic soils, in hot and dry weathers. It is one of the
most ancient and native species of Mesoamerica.
The dry weather of San Miguel is proper for the growth
of this wild crop and its industrial crop of three kind of
agave, two of them abundant Agave acuispina y Agave
letonae. Letonae Trelease variety is raised industrially in
this area to produce natural fibers and elaborate bags,
lasso, and other by-products of the fiber which supply
the local and international market.
The “agave” contributed to the industrialization of
Salvadorean agriculture, especially along all the 20th
Century. It was one of the products which stood in the
international market during World War II. Nowadays, it
keeps its importance for the packaging of products like
coffee, cacao, vegetables and grains, and it continues
to generate traditional employment that conserves an
ancestral crop.
