More than 100 species of Fungi were registered
in El Salvador between 1977 and 2013. They
grow in the soil, leaf litter, tree truncs, livestock
manure, and even in other type of fungi.
During the prehispanic time, its intake was
part of the diet and sacred rituals. During
colonization, the introduction of livestock
lead it to the growth of new species in our
native environment. Nowadays, they are still,
a little explored botanical source.
Among the eatable, native species are identified
“Tenquique" (Pseudofistulina radicata), "Oreja
de cuche" (Auricularia), oyster (Pleurotus),
champignon (Agaricus), blue mushroom,
(Lactarius), and red mushroom (Russula);
hallucinogenics like Cubensis; and poisonous
like Amanita.”
