Among the oldest plants that covered our soil are deciduous trees, which in addition to<br />

nourishing the soil with their leaves, generated the mushroom ecosystem and hanging<br />

plants which grow in its branches.<br />

The most popular and indispensable native trees for our diet and identity are: “pitos,<br />

mamón, guarumo, matapalo, carao, caimito, semilla de pan, guanaba, nance, mamey,<br />

níspero, jocotes, sunza o sunzapote, icaco, sincuya, almendro, arrayán, guachipilín,<br />

manzana rosa, hoja de golpe, papaturro, paterna, pepeto, pochoto, tecomasuche, and<br />

cuchamper.”<br />

Pito tree grows in dry and humid forests, it blooms from January to March, although it<br />

gives its fruit all year long. The popular food consumption is of its flowers and outbreak of<br />

new leaves, and its consumption induces sleep.<br />
