The chemical industry contributes to the low carboneconomy by producing, for instance, materials forwind turbines.intensive companies have shownsignificant progress in energy efficiency, the SME’s need more practical help inthe process.Help is provided by the ChemicalIndustry Federation of Finland, whichis implementing the Cefic Care+ energyefficiency programme. Energy efficiencytraining and guidance are provided by theenergy consultancy company Motiva.A new tool in the box is the EuropeanSPiCE 3 project, in which the ChemicalIndustry Federation of Finland is one ofthe partners. The SPiCE 3 aims to boostenergy efficiency across the Europeanchemical industry, particularly in smalland medium sized companies.Launched in April 2013, the projectenables companies to benefit from theexisting energy efficiency tools andexchange best practice through an onlineplatform, industry workshops, andtailored training.Coordinated by the European ChemicalIndustry Council Cefic, this projectbrings together 11 national chemicalfederations, which together account foraround four-fifths of European chemicalsindustry sales. The project has been selected for EUco-funding under the Intelligent EnergyEurope programme coordinated by theExecutive Agency for Competitivenessand Innovation (EACI).ScanstockphotoEnergy efficiency and greenhousegas emission reductionsthrough productsProducts of the chemical industry are used by virtually all othersectors of the economy and will be crucial to enabling the lowcarbon economy.
