Technical Research Centreof Finland VTT has launched a spearhead programme titledGreen Solutions for Water and Waste (GWW) facilitatingthe creation of new technology and business for sustainabletreatment of water and waste globally by integrating differenttechnologies.The four-year programme started in January 2011 covers,among other things, energy-efficient membrane solutions forthe recycling and purification of industrial waters as well asthe recovery of valuable substances such as metals from thewaste.“We create better prerequisites for the industry to developinnovations in waste and water management and the expertiserequired for their commercialisation. We provide the companieswith research services and expertise, which will integratedifferent technologies and disciplines. We help them to developincreasingly competitive products for the global market”, saysMona Arnold, programme manager and principal scientist atVTT.“We will also develop the processes and the patent portfolioresulting from the research.”VTT researchers are collaborating closely with the companiesand other research organisations. The programme involvesapproximately one hundred research workers at VTT.“The aim is to create business-promoting solutions for thecompanies. In addition, we aspire after new scientific results,spin-off companies and patents”, says Arnold.“We want to be among the world’s best research organisationswithin our own areas of specialisation.”Clean water and materialefficiency as megatrendsAccording to the US National Intelligence Council, scarcity ofclean water is becoming a central global megatrend by 2030.The demand for water is estimated to grow by 40 per cent overthe next 15 to 20 years.32 KEMIA 5/2013
