We also present our<strong>in</strong>dustry to policymakers, emphasis<strong>in</strong>gplastic’s suitability to susta<strong>in</strong>abledevelopment.Fulfill<strong>in</strong>g frequent requests forproduct guides and detailed adviceis part of our daily activities. In aneffort to <strong>in</strong>crease public awareness ofplastic as a material and o<strong>the</strong>rwise spuryoung people’s <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> our <strong>in</strong>dustry,we became <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> a nationwideeducational project <strong>in</strong> 2012.The project <strong>in</strong>corporates a methodologydesigned to promote <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong>learn<strong>in</strong>g by actively collect<strong>in</strong>g reallife<strong>in</strong>formation to complete schoolassignments of <strong>the</strong> pupils’ own design.The students, 13–17-year-olds <strong>in</strong> our testgroups, set <strong>the</strong>ir assignments <strong>in</strong> plasticrelatedresearch.The best “phenomena-be-plastic”projects become models to share withstudents and teachers around <strong>the</strong> country,with new assignments be<strong>in</strong>g born all<strong>the</strong> time. The project has generatedconsiderable <strong>in</strong>terest; history teachers,home economics teachers, and especiallytechnical and vocational subject teachershave discovered “new frontiers” for <strong>the</strong>irwork, thanks to plastics.Moreover, at <strong>the</strong> end of 2012 classrooms<strong>in</strong> over 100 comprehensiveschools <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>land had access to 3-Dpr<strong>in</strong>ters for use <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir assignments fordesign<strong>in</strong>g and produc<strong>in</strong>g plastics andproducts made of plastic.The author is Manag<strong>in</strong>g Director at <strong>the</strong>F<strong>in</strong>nish Plastics Industry Federation.vesa.karha@plastics.fiwww.plastics.fi5/2013 KEMIA51
