The automobile<strong>in</strong>dustry is an important partner, as are<strong>the</strong> aerospace and boat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries.Move on <strong>the</strong> momentMobility, urbanisation, demographicchange, f<strong>in</strong>ite resources, and o<strong>the</strong>rsignificant macro trends generatedemand for plastics products <strong>in</strong> general,for components <strong>in</strong> plumb<strong>in</strong>g and watersupply systems <strong>in</strong> particular.The merger of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructuresolutions bus<strong>in</strong>esses Uponor Plc and<strong>the</strong> KWH Group <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g of 2013is <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of two strong plasticpipe manufacturers <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>land <strong>in</strong>to aformidable jo<strong>in</strong>t venture company calledUponor Infra Oy. We will certa<strong>in</strong>lycont<strong>in</strong>ue to see such consolidationsbetween plastics converters.The plastics <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>landdirectly employs around 11,000. Theywork <strong>in</strong> 600 companies, mostly <strong>in</strong> smallbus<strong>in</strong>esses with five employees or less.Attract<strong>in</strong>g professionals, and keep<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong> long term, are major concernsto <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. Our future also dependson <strong>the</strong> locations of our raw materialssuppliers and <strong>the</strong> device manufacturerswe, <strong>in</strong> turn, supply. Enterprises <strong>in</strong> Europeand across <strong>the</strong> globe compete ever morefiercely for talent and skill even as general<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> vocational careers wanes.In any event, <strong>the</strong> areas of hypergrowthand mass markets are outside of F<strong>in</strong>land.All <strong>the</strong>se factors force us to th<strong>in</strong>k on ourHELLA Light<strong>in</strong>g F<strong>in</strong>land Oyfeet, move on a moment, and build trustalong <strong>the</strong> way. As always, our successwill depend on our abilities to keep stepwith our customers and <strong>the</strong>ir needs, whilealways be<strong>in</strong>g one step ahead.Learn<strong>in</strong>g projectsWe live <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information Society.Many also refer to this as be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ageof plastic.Information about <strong>the</strong> materials <strong>in</strong>use today <strong>in</strong>terest many different typesof people. Plenty of facts about plasticsand plastic-related issues are readilyavailable on <strong>the</strong> Internet and socialmedia. We also present our<strong>in</strong>dustry to policymakers, emphasis<strong>in</strong>gplastic’s suitability to susta<strong>in</strong>abledevelopment.Fulfill<strong>in</strong>g frequent requests forproduct guides and detailed adviceis part of our daily activities. In aneffort to <strong>in</strong>crease public awareness ofplastic as a material and o<strong>the</strong>rwise spuryoung people’s <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> our <strong>in</strong>dustry,we became <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> a nationwideeducational project <strong>in</strong> 2012.The project <strong>in</strong>corporates a methodologydesigned to promote <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong>learn<strong>in</strong>g by actively collect<strong>in</strong>g reallife<strong>in</strong>formation to complete schoolassignments of <strong>the</strong> pupils’ own design.The students, 13–17-year-olds <strong>in</strong> our testgroups, set <strong>the</strong>ir assignments <strong>in</strong> plasticrelatedresearch.The best “phenomena-be-plastic”projects become models to share withstudents and teachers around <strong>the</strong> country,with new assignments be<strong>in</strong>g born all<strong>the</strong> time. The project has generatedconsiderable <strong>in</strong>terest; history teachers,home economics teachers, and especiallytechnical and vocational subject teachershave discovered “new frontiers” for <strong>the</strong>irwork, thanks to plastics.Moreover, at <strong>the</strong> end of 2012 classrooms<strong>in</strong> over 100 comprehensiveschools <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>land had access to 3-Dpr<strong>in</strong>ters for use <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir assignments fordesign<strong>in</strong>g and produc<strong>in</strong>g plastics andproducts made of plastic.The author is Manag<strong>in</strong>g Director at <strong>the</strong>F<strong>in</strong>nish Plastics Industry Federation.vesa.karha@plastics.fiwww.plastics.fi5/2013 KEMIA51
