navy, and the Amandine, a local fishing trawler.
Ostend once had ambitions to be the Monte Carlo
of the north, as indicated by its beachfront casino
(kursaaloostende.be), complete with murals by
surrealist painter Paul Delvaux. There’s more art on
show at the Kunstmuseum aan Zee, or Art Museum by
the Sea (pmmk.be), including
James Ensor and Léon Spilliaert. A
native and almost immovable
Ostender, Ensor’s house is also
open to the public (toerismeoostende.be).
Ostend is the City of
Culture in Flanders in 2010, and
there are many events marking this accolade: pop in to
the tourist office on Monacoplein to find out more.
History lessons
Two stops east, at Duin en Zee, is the Earth Explorer
(earthexplorer.be), a science theme park that’s way
too good to save for a rainy day. Nestled in the dunes
behind it is Fort Napoleon (fortnapoleon.be), the only
fort from the Emperor’s time that’s still intact. In
a truly Belgian touch, it’s now home to a restaurant.
Heading back west, the Kusttram passes beneath the
silent guns and glowering pillboxes of the Atlantic
Wall – the string of coastal fortifications the Nazis built
along the coast to repel an invasion. Alighting at the
Domein Raversijde stop, you arrive at the open-air
Atlantic Wall Museum.
There’s been unsightly development at some points
along the coast, with buildings forming a concrete wall
between sea and land, but thankfully De Haan has
escaped this blight. The prettiest resort on the coast, it
was preserved by building regulations that stipulated
no house could be taller than two storeys. The resulting
villas are a delightful jumble of architectural styles
– including Arts and Crafts, gothic and modernism –
with many decorated with beautiful art nouveau tiles.
The town of Blankenberge, meanwhile, is everything
De Haan is not: buzzing, bustling and built-up. There’s
a pier, a huge number of shops, and Sea Life (sealife.
be), the best and biggest aquarium on the coast.
Riding on the Kusttram through Zeebrugge reveals
the chance to see huge container ships unloading
at one of Europe’s largest ports, before the tram
terminates at Knokke-Heist near the Dutch

poissons et fruits de mer de tout le pays. On dénombre
pas moins de six restaurants étoilés au Michelin
dans les villes et les villages qui longent la route du
Kusttram. Mais pour une excellente nourriture à des
prix modérés, rien ne vaut les échoppes de moules
et de gaufres des quais d’Ostende. Une balade le long
de ces mêmes quais vous plongera également dans la
longue histoire qui relie Ostende à la mer. Deux
bateaux historiques ont été transformés en musées : le
Mercator, un trois-mâts, autrefois base d’entraînement
des officiers de la marine marchande belge, et
l’Amandine, un chalutier de pêche local.
Ostende caressa autrefois l’ambition de devenir le
Monte Carlo du nord, comme en témoigne son casino à
front de mer (kursaaloostende.be) où l’on peut apprécier
des fresques du peintre surréaliste Paul Delvaux. Et
pour d’autres expositions, le Kunstmuseum aan Zee,
ou « Musée d’Art à la mer » (pmmk.be), abrite des
œuvres de James Ensor et de Léon Spilliaert. Originaire
d’Ostende, Ensor y est une figure incontournable ;
sa maison est également ouverte au public (toerismeoostende.be).
Consacrée Ville de la Culture de Flandre
en 2010, Ostende accueille pour l’occasion de nombreux
événements. Faites un saut à l’office du tourisme,

Leçons d’histoire
Deux arrêts plus loin, vers l’est, à Duin en Zee, se trouve
le parc scientifique Earth Explorer (earthexplorer.be) :
ce ne serait pas rendre justice à ce lieu merveilleux que
d’attendre un jour de pluie pour le visiter. À quelques
pas de là, caché dans les dunes, apparaît le Fort
Napoléon (fortnapoleon.be), l’unique fort de l’époque
impériale resté intact. Dans une optique toute belge, la
citadelle abrite désormais un bistrot et un restaurant.
Dans la direction opposée, vers l’ouest, le Kusttram passe
devant les canons silencieux et les bunkers lugubres du
Mur de l’Atlantique – cette ligne de fortification côtière
construite par les Nazis pour repousser les
débarquements. Si vous descendez au Domaine de
Raversijde, vous arriverez au Musée en plein air du
