* GUIDES Banjul Fort for freedom With so many sights along the West African coast relating to the slave trade, it’s well worth taking a look at a seafront fortification that was founded to aid abolition. Take the cheap, rickety ferry from Banjul’s ferry terminal (Liberation Avenue), endure the half-hour crossing and, on docking at Barra on the far side of the mouth of the river, you should be able to catch sight of Fort Bullen. This squat, whitewashed building was founded by the British in 1826 to aid their control of the river mouth. Though the British Empire had abolished the slave trade in 1807, its guns in Banjul couldn’t cover the entire river mouth, allowing Portuguese and French slave vessels to slip through, hugging the far bank. Once cannons were installed at Fort Bullen, however, the river’s far shore no longer offered such a safe haven. Though the fort was awarded UNESCO status in 2003, it isn’t the easiest place to gain access to, as the Gambian military have begun to take an interest in it. Still, the building stands as a reminder of one of colonialism’s brighter aspects. This seafront enclave shelters some of the best-preserved mangrove swamps in d’accoster à Barra, sur l’autre rive du fleuve Gambie, le Fort Bullen devrait être en vue.
