Mexico
This was Mexico’s second appearance in this
category, after also qualifying for the FIFA
U-19 Women’s World Championship in Canada
in 2002. They struggled to secure the
last CONCACAF place against stiff competition,
always competing with the USA and
Canada for the spots. Mexico were placed
in Group C with Switzerland, Germany and
Korea DPR. Mexico basically used a 4-4-2
formation. All of the players had good individual
skills and were comfortable on the
ball. When they were given enough space,
they showed their skills and displayed a
style of football that included intuitiveness
and creativity. In attack, they implemented
counter-attacks mainly through two attackers:
Monica Ocampo (9) and one of the
youngest players in the tournament, the
very promising talent Charlyn Corral (10).
Showing fl exibility and movement upfront,
the two could split the opponents’ defence
by themselves. In defence, the team was not
superior physically to their opponents. With
the exception of the game against Switzerland,
their defensive line withdrew and on
occasions as many as six players were in the
last line of defence, including one player
covering space behind the line. This created
space for opponents to build up attacks in
midfi eld with ease. They won the fi rst match
against Switzerland, which was actually an
even contest even though the game ended
4-2, as the two teams gave each other space
to build their attacks. This created many
goalscoring chances for both teams. In their
next encounter, they were defeated 9-1 by
Germany, a tough game to recover from.
They bravely tried to regroup against Korea
DPR but lost 4-0 and could not proceed to
the next round.
Pour obtenir sa deuxième participation dans
cette catégorie d’âge après Canada 2002, le
Mexique avait dû batailler dur dans les éliminatoires
de la CONCACAF, décrochant la dernière
place qualifi cative derrière les Etats-Unis
et le Canada. Le Mexique se retrouvait dans
le groupe C avec la Suisse, l’Allemagne et la
Corée du Nord. Le Mexique se présentait en
4-4-2. Dès qu’elles avaient un peu d’espace,
les joueuses pouvaient exprimer leur belle
technique individuelle et mettre en place un
jeu créatif et inspiré. L’équipe cherchait à jouer
le contre en alertant ses deux attaquantes :
Monica Ocampo (9) et la talentueuse Charlyn
Corral (10), une des plus jeunes joueuses de
la compétition. Mobile et complémentaire, ce
tandem parvenait à déstabiliser les défenses
à lui tout seul. En défense, l’équipe accusait
un défi cit physique par rapport à ses adversaires.
A l’exception du match contre la Suisse,
le Mexique avait tendance à se recroqueviller
en défense : en plus du libéro, la ligne arrière
était souvent composée de six joueuses. Cela
laissait beaucoup d’espace à l’adversaire pour
construire tranquillement ses attaques. Le
Mexique a remporté son premier match face
aux Suisses (4-2), à l’occasion d’une rencontre
somme toute équilibrée où les deux équipes
parvenaient à bien placer leurs offensives. Il
y a eu de nombreuses occasions de part et
d’autre. Pour leur deuxième match, les Mexicaines
ont essuyé une défaite 9-1 contre l’Allemagne.
S’étant reconcentrées après cette
déroute, elles n’ont toutefois pu éviter de
s’incliner face aux Nord-coréennes (4-0).

conjunto mexicano debió esforzarse a fondo
para obtener el último cupo del contingente
en la eliminatorias de la CONCACAF, combatiendo
como siempre contra EE UU y Canadá
por los puestos mundialistas. Las mexicanas se
enfrentaron a Suiza, Alemania y la RDP de Corea
en el grupo C. México planteó un sistema
básico de 4-4-2. Todas las jugadoras estaban
dotadas de buena táctica individual y dominio
del balón. Cuando disponían de sufi ciente
espacio, dejaban entrever su gran habilidad,
desplegando un juego intuitivo y creativo. Su
despliegue ofensivo se basó particularmente
en maniobras de contraataque, cuyas artífi -
ces fueron Mónica Ocampo (9), una de las
jugadoras más jóvenes del torneo, y la talentosa
Charlyn Corral (10). Estas jugadoras se
desempeñaban con asombrosa fl exibilidad y
dinamismo, y desequilibraban frecuentemente
las defensas contrarias. A excepción del
partido contra Suiza, la defensa se replegaba
a una posición muy rezagada y contaba a veces
con seis jugadoras de contención y una
adicional que cubría detrás de dicha línea, lo
cual concedía espacio a las rivales para armar
su juego en la línea media. Ganaron el primer
choque contra Suiza, un encuentro sumamente
equilibrado, pese al resultado fi nal de 4 a
2. Las dos escuadras maniobraron con líneas
muy abiertas, ofreciendo así posibilidades de
incursión rival y llegadas al arco contrario. En
su siguiente encuentro fueron apabulladas
9 a 1 por Alemania y, aunque intentaran reorganizarse
en su tercer partido contra Corea,
fueron batidas por 4 a 0 y eliminadas de la
competición.
Die Juniorinnen Mexikos nahmen nach der
FIFA U-19-Frauenfussball-Weltmeisterschaft
2002 in Kanada zum zweiten Mal an der
WM-Endrunde teil. In der hart umkämpften
Qualifi kation konnten sie sich hinter den
USA und Kanada den letzten CONCACAF-
Startplatz sichern. Das junge Team, traf in
der Gruppe C auf die Schweiz, Deutschland
und die DVR Korea. Die Mexikanerinnen
spielten meistens in einer 4-4-2-Formation.
Alle Spielerinnen brachten gute individuelle
Fähigkeiten mit und waren ballsicher.
Wenn sie genügend Platz hatten, stellten sie
ihr Können unter Beweis und zeigten intuitiven
und kreativen Fussball. In der Offensive
suchten sie den Erfolg in Kontern über ihre
Stürmerinnen Monica Ocampo (9) und Charlyn
Corral (10), ein vielversprechendes Talent
und eine der jüngsten Spielerinnen des Turniers.
Die beiden waren ständig in Bewegung
und konnten die gegnerischen Abwehrreihen
im Alleingang in Bedrängnis bringen. In der
Defensive hatte das Team im Vergleich zu seinen
Gegnerinnen keine körperlichen Vorteile.
Ausser im Spiel gegen die Schweiz zog sich die
Abwehrreihe immer weit zurück und bestand
manchmal aus bis zu sechs Spielerinnen, von
denen eine hinter ihren Kolleginnen absicherte.
Dadurch hatten die Gegnerinnen im
Mittelfeld viel Platz, um ungestört ihre Angriffe
aufzubauen. Ihre Auftaktpartie gegen
die Schweiz gewannen die Mexikanerinnen
nach einem offen geführten, ausgeglichenen
Spiel mit vielen Torchancen auf beiden Seiten
mit 4:2. Ihr nächstes Spiel gegen Deutschland
endete mit einer 1:9-Kanterniederlage – ein
Schock, von dem sie sich nicht mehr vollständig
erholen sollten. Sie versuchten, sich für
die letzte Partie gegen die DVR Korea noch
einmal aufzurappeln, verloren aber mit 0:4
und verpassten den Einzug in die nächste
Runde.
