Statistics and Team Data Switzerland Switzerland were making their fi rst appearance in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship after overcoming strong contenders and fi nally beating England in a play off. Switzerland used a 4-4-2 formation, with emphasis on counter-attacks. Their two speedy attackers, Vanessa Buerki (7) and Ramona Bachmann (3), were aggressive and mobile upfront, always looking for a route to goal. The strength of the combination play between these two players resulted in many goalscoring chances. Diagonal balls from the midfi elders behind the opponents’ defensive line also resulted in penetrating attacks. The Swiss defence was well organised, and the players moved in a traditional zonal defensive pattern. They worked hard and were compact in the central area, showing fi ghting spirit led by the defensive leader Caroline Abbé (2) in the middle. Sometimes, however, they left major gaps between the lines, allowing opponents too much creative playing space in midfi eld. As for transitions into attack, Switzerland played the ball quickly to the forwards for counter-attacks or varied them with combination play. Their fi rst match against Mexico was a rather balanced affair that could have gone either way. The Swiss created some very good chances, and were awarded a penalty kick, but they failed to convert it and were beaten 4-2. In the second match against Korea DPR, and in their third match against Germany, they stood up bravely but were beaten comfortably. Although they failed to gain a point, losing all three matches, they did show strong spirit and their way of trying to develop their play will surely gain results in the future. La complémentarité des deux joueuses a offert de nombreuses occasions de but aux Suissesses. Des transversales effectuées par les milieux dans le dos de la défense permettaient également de porter le danger devant. La défense suisse était bien organisée dans un schéma classique en zone. Volontaire et combative, la défense était compacte dans l’axe et s’organisait autour de Caroline Abbé (2). Il y a avait parfois pourtant des espaces entre les lignes, ce qui laissait trop de marge de manœuvre à l’adversaire. Lors des remontées de balles, la Suisse jouait rapidement le contre en cherchant ses deux avants ou alors variait en amorçant des mouvements collectifs. Le premier match contre le Mexique était relativement équilibré et aurait pu basculer d’un côté comme de l’autre. Les Helvètes se sont créées de très bonnes occasions et ont été récompensées d’un penalty, mais elles ne l’ont pas transformé et se sont inclinées 4-2. Pour leur deuxième et troisième matches, contre la Corée du Nord et l’Allemagne, l’équipe a fait preuve de courage mais a été largement battue. Bien qu’elle ne soit pas parvenue à empocher de point, la sélection suisse a fait preuve d’un bel état d’esprit, et la manière dont elle a développé son jeu laisse augurer de bonnes choses pour l’avenir. Allerdings liessen sie manchmal grosse Lücken entstehen und gewährten ihren Gegnerinnen dadurch zu viel Raum für deren Aufbau. Beim Umschalten in die Offensive suchten sie entweder sofort die Stürmerinnen oder sicherten zunächst den Ballbesitz mit guten Pässen. Ihr erstes Spiel gegen Mexiko (2:4) verlief sehr ausgeglichen und hätte auch zu ihren Gunsten ausgehen können. Die Schweizerinnen erarbeiteten sich einige ausgezeichnete Chancen und bekamen zudem einen Strafstoss zugesprochen, den sie allerdings nicht verwerten konnten. In ihren anderen beiden Partien gegen die DVR Korea und Deutschland kämpften sie tapfer, mussten sich aber letztlich klar geschlagen geben. Obwohl sie damit ohne Punktgewinn blieben, liessen sie die Köpfe nicht hängen und werden, wenn sie ihren bisherigen Weg konsequent weiterverfolgen, in Zukunft sicher auch Spiele gewinnen können. 140 141
