The USA had the most experience, with
teams having taken part in every fi nal competition
of FIFA women’s tournaments
since 1991. The team’s basic formation was
4-2-3-1, which provided defensive and offensive
fl exibility. Defensively, their collective
movements, aerial dominance, physical
size and most importantly the goalkeeping
strength of Val Henderson (1), contributed
to the low number of goals conceded. The
USA wanted and always had a high percentage
of possession. Pressure was immediately
applied to the opponent’s ball carrier to regain
possession. Despite the entertainment
provided by their offensive actions, both on
and off the ball, they too often led to ineffi -
cient results. The chances created in many of
their games were not converted and this was
the main reason for their fourth-place fi nish.
Although their system offered fl exibility, the
team showed a lack of positional sense on
the front line and lacked explosiveness at the
right moment. This went hand in hand with
the absence of players with personality and
an eagerness to win the important games.
The game against Germany was the best
demonstration of the USA’s capacities. The
team showed great self-confi dence, good
inter-passing skills and an excellent change of
pace, using the wings well, combining wing
play with excellent crosses, powerful shooting,
great heading and fi nally, entertainment.
This game showed everyone that the USA
deserved to reach the fi nal. When looking
closely at the semi-fi nal and match for third
place results, the team was also unlucky to
lose both in penalty shoot outs.

depuis 1991. L’équipe évoluait en 4-2-3-1,
ce qui lui conférait une fl exibilité offensive
comme défensive. Derrière, les mouvements
collectifs, l’aisance dans les airs, la taille des
joueuses mais surtout le talent de la gardienne
Val Henderson (1) ont permis à la défense
de n’encaisser que peu de buts. L’équipe
cherchait à conserver le ballon un maximum.
Dès la perte du ballon, un pressing immédiat
était orchestré sur le porteur. Malgré le côté
spectaculaire de leurs offensives, avec ou sans
ballon, elles se sont montrées trop souvent
stériles. Les occasions de but n’étaient pas
concrétisées et cela ne leur a permis de ne
se classer que quatrième. Malgré la fl exibilité
de son système de jeu, l’équipe a montré
un placement défectueux en attaque et peu
d’explosivité aux moments importants. A cela
s’ajoute l’absence de joueuses à forte personnalité,
de gagneuses capables de transcender
l’équipe pour les grands matches. La rencontre
face à l’Allemagne a été la meilleure
démonstration des capacités des Etats-Unis.
L’équipe s’est montrée sûre d’elle, combinant
bien et changeant de rythme, utilisant les
ailes, effectuant de bons centres, des frappes
lointaines et se montrant performante dans
les airs, sans oublier de se faire plaisir. Ce
match a montré que les Etats-Unis méritaient
d’aller en fi nale. En effet, les joueuses ont ensuite
joué de malchance en perdant aux tirs
au but en demi-fi nale et lors du match pour
la troisième place.

el torneo, ya que había participado en todos
los mundiales femeninos de la FIFA desde
1991. Planteó un sistema 4-2-3-1 que ofreció
fl exibilidad defensiva y ofensiva. Los movimientos
coordinados de la defensa, la potencia
aérea de las integrantes, su condición
física y, ante todo, la extraordinaria capacidad
de la portera Val Henderson (1) contribuyeron
al reducido número de goles concedidos. Por
lo general, el conjunto norteamericano dominó
sus partidos. Al perder el balón, agobiaban
inmediatamente a la adversaria que llevaba la
pelota para recuperarla con rapidez. Pese a
sus llamativas acciones ofensivas, tanto con
el balón como sin él, la cosecha de goles fue
muy magra. No supieron aprovechar las numerosas
oportunidades de gol creadas y este
fue el principal motivo de que terminaran
solamente en el cuarto puesto fi nal. Si bien
su sistema era fl exible, la escuadra careció de
sentido de ubicación en la vanguardia y del
ímpetu sufi ciente en los momentos cruciales.
Esto coincidió con la ausencia de jugadoras
con personalidad y la falta de ambición de
ganar partidos decisivos. No obstante, el choque
con Alemania fue un buen ejemplo de
las capacidades del elenco norteamericano.
El equipo salió con gran confi anza, mostró
extraordinarias combinaciones, cambios de
ritmo de juego, deslumbrante manejo de
balón, potentes remates, precisos centros,
excelente juego de cabeza y, en defi nitiva, un
grandioso fútbol espectáculo. Este encuentro
demostró que EE UU hubiera merecido llegar
a la fi nal. Si se analiza la semifi nal y el partido
por el tercer puesto, se constata que la
escuadra norteamericana tuvo mala suerte al
perder las dos veces sólo en la tanda de tiros
penales.

und vor allem die hervorragende Torhüterin
Val Henderson (1) die Gründe dafür, dass sie
nur wenige Gegentore kassierten. Sie versuchten
erfolgreich, sich einen grossen Anteil
am Ballbesitz zu sichern, und setzten die ballführende
Gegenspielerin immer sofort unter
Druck. In der Offensive zeigten sie attraktive
Spielzüge, aus denen sie aber häufi g zu wenig
machten. In den meisten Spielen liessen
sie viele Chancen ungenutzt, was der Hauptgrund
dafür war, dass sie am Ende nur den
vierten Platz belegten. Ihr System bot zwar
Raum für Flexibilität, aber im Spiel nach vorne
fehlten ihnen trotzdem oft die Anspielstationen
und die zündenden Ideen. Zudem hatten
sie zu wenige Spielerinnen mit Leaderqualitäten
und dem absoluten Willen, die wichtigen
Partien zu gewinnen. Ihre beste Leistung
zeigten die Amerikanerinnen im Viertelfi nale
gegen Deutschland. Sie traten selbstbewusst
auf und überzeugten mit sicherem Passspiel,
ausgezeichneten Rhythmuswechseln, gutem
Flügelspiel, schönen Flanken, harten Schüssen,
präzisen Kopfbällen und nicht zuletzt
mit sehr attraktivem, unterhaltendem Fussball.
Dieses Spiel bewies, dass die Amerikanerinnen
einen Platz im Finale verdient gehabt
hätten. Sowohl im Halbfi nale als auch
im Spiel um den dritten Platz hatten sie viel
Pech, verloren sie doch beide Male erst im
Elfmeterschiessen.
