Avec sa vue imprenable sur le golfe de Saint-Florent, Nonza est un
village unique en Corse car il n’est pas construit en plusieurs
hameaux. Toutes les maisons en lauze se grappent autour de sa magnifique
église du XIV e siècle, dont le clocher à la pointe blanche et les murs roses
sont inscrits aux Monuments historiques. Au sommet de la falaise
dominant la mer, le « Monte » est surplombé de la tour « Paolina »
construite en 1760 par le célèbre Pascal Paoli sur les ruines d’une
forteresse médiévale pour faire face aux éventuels assaillants. Fait rare sur
une île qui a bardé ses côtes de tours uniquement génoises lors de sa
domination de 1284 à 1768. Une fontaine à dévotion sous la route au nord,
à côté d’une chapelle, ne manquez pas de visiter la fontaine de Santa
Ghjulia. Lors de son martyre à la fin de l’époque romaine, la légende
raconte que ses seins coupés furent jetés contre un rocher d'où aurait jailli
une source miraculeuse. Le patrimoine se déniche aussi vers la mer : au
sud, l’ancien couvent San Francescu, au nord, les vestiges de terrasses
agricoles et l’ancienne Marine di Nonza. Toute la côte est constituée d'une
immense et mystérieuse plage de sable et de galets noirs issus des rejets
d'exploitation d’une ancienne carrière d'amiante. Sur le chemin qui mène
à la tour, une halte s’impose dans le lieu atypique « La Sassa », un barrestaurant
blotti au milieu des rochers, « petit paradis de la Corse sauvage ».

With its stunning view over the Saint-Florent Gulf, Nonza is a unique
village in Corsica because it isn’t composed of several hamlets. All the
lauze houses huddle together around the magnificent 14th century
church, whose white pointed bell-tower and pink walls are classified as
a Historic Monument. On the clifftop overlooking the sea, the “Monte” is
crowned with the “Paolina” tower built in 1760 by the famous Pascal
Paoli on the ruins of a Medieval fortress in resistance to assailants. A
rarity for the island which generally protected its coastline with Genoese
towers while they ruled from 1284 to 1768. Beside a chapel on the
northern road, don’t miss the Saint Julie fountain. At the end of Roman
times, the legend goes that the martyr had her breasts cut off and thrown
against a rock from which gushed a miraculous spring. Other
monuments are to be found towards the sea: to the south, the former San
Francescu convent, to the north, the remains of the terraced agricultural
land and the ancient Marine di Nonza. The entire coastline consists of
an immense and mysterious beach of sand and black pebbles, created
from the waste of the abandoned asbestos quarry. On the path that leads
to the tower, make sure you stop off at the unusual bar-restaurant “La
Sassa”, hidden between the rocks. “A little paradise of wild Corsica”.
