♦ Per quanto riguarda i numeri complessi, BOMBELLI li <strong>in</strong>troduce nella<br />
sua Algebra (1572) e ne dà le regole <strong>di</strong> calcolo.<br />
DESCARTES <strong>in</strong>vece resp<strong>in</strong>ge le ra<strong>di</strong>ci complesse e le chiama<br />
"immag<strong>in</strong>arie” GIRARD (Invention nouvelle en l'algèbre, 1629) li<br />
riconosce come soluzioni formali delle equazioni:<br />
"Si potrebbe <strong>di</strong>re: quale utilità hanno queste soluzioni impossibili [le<br />
ra<strong>di</strong>ci complesse]? Io rispondo: servono a tre cose, alla certezza delle<br />
regole generali, alla loro utilità e perché non ci sono altre soluzioni"<br />
I. NEWTON non le considerava forse perché non avevano all'epoca<br />
nessun significato fisico (Arithmetica universalis, 1728, p.193) e G. W.<br />
LEIBNIZ sebbene lavorasse con i numeri complessi non ne comprendeva<br />
appieno la natura:<br />
“Lo spirito <strong>di</strong>v<strong>in</strong>o trovò una via d'uscita sublime <strong>in</strong> quel mostro dell’<br />
analisi quel portento del mondo ideale, quell'anfibio fra essere e nonessere<br />
che chiamiamo ra<strong>di</strong>ce immag<strong>in</strong>aria dell'unità negativa"<br />
