Big on bakkies
and big on agriculture
THE FIRST SENWES OFM BAKKIE DAY

FOR EVERYONE AT THIS DAY FOR
BAKKIE ENTHUSIASTS.
The highlight of the Bakkie Day
was the performances by some of South Africa’s
top musicians. Thabo Hlongwane, the first performer,
walked on the stage around midday. Visitors
dragged their camping chairs closer, got comfort-

able and prepared to be entertained. The big names
followed one after the other from there: Gerhard
Steyn, Dozi, Chris Chameleon and Theuns Jordaan.
Senwes Scenario caught up with the artists and they
shared their views and ties to agriculture with us.
Thabo Hlongwane used to work at Grain SA and
is currently busy with his honours degree in Agricultural
Economics at the University of the Free State.
He says he will never give up on agriculture and
despite his rising fame as musician, he wants to
make a difference: “Agriculture is very undermined
in South Africa and it’s not functioning at an optimal
level yet. It would be nice to just get into the
industry and see what role I can play in making agriculture
contribute more,” Thabo said. “I want to see
our farmers and the agricultural industry competing
on an international level.”
Gerhard Steyn, who followed Thabo’s performance
with his own, has no specific agricultural ties
but believes he still plays a role: “Everyone has a
