Lehmann Marine presents new battery system CUBE
When ships are hybridized or electrified,
the limited space often becomes
a problem when it comes to creating
sufficient battery power on board.
With the CUBE, Lehmann Marine is
now presenting a solution that enables
compact battery modules to be flexibly
stacked, even in a confined space, thus
enabling the development of a very
high energy density.
The modular and compact CUBE has an
innovative air cooling technology that
is patented as a utility model. Uniform
cooling of all cells ensures a long cycle
life for the battery system, and the different
aging of the cells is avoided.
The CUBE battery system is cobalt
and nickel free and scalable from a
few kWh to several MWh. Thanks to
the free configuration of the modular
units in strings of up to 1,000 VDC,
any size of energy storage is available.
The CUBE strings include an integrated
battery management system (BMS)
and pre-charge functionality.
A high level of safety is guaranteed
using fireproof LFP technology
(‘Lithium Ferro Phosphate’) and permanent
monitoring by the battery
management system at cell, module,
and string level. The chemistry of the
LFP battery will not ignite in the event
of thermal runaway, short circuit,
or mechanical damage, making the
CUBE, like all Lehmann Marine battery
systems, a safe solution for marine use.
The first CUBE systems for three
different ferries with a total capacity of
1.6 MWh have been delivered in late
summer. Several products were also
delivered this year for the COBRA
battery system, which recently
received RINA type approval in addition
to DNV type approval. Among
other things, Lehmann Marine is supplying
a 546 kWh system with special
coating according to customer requirements
for a 140ft hybrid yacht in
Turkey.
