ABSTRACT
The serious problem of the Brazilian homes deficit caused by the very bad income distribution,
the unemployment, low salaries and the social, economic and habitational politics existing in the
country, allied to the forms that conduct the housing production, have imposed a high cost to the
right to inhabit. Therefore in Mato Grosso state, because of the economical importance of the
lumber industry, an initiative for the use of the wastes from the sawnmills for the construction of
houses for low income people has originated. There are 1.313 sawnmills and 67 industries that
produce veneers for the plywood market (FIEMT, 2000), which generate a huge amount of
lumber wastes. The reuse of those wastes from the industries have also the goal of preventing the
degradation of the environment, eliminating the pollution of the air, the water and the ground,
reducing its burning. This research has the objective of making use of the wastes, which consist
of peaces of lumber with length smaller than 200 cm, and poles originated from the fabrication
of veneers at rolling mills. With the preservative treatment and the drying of the wood, they had
been considered three “home kits”, nominated PEJA, PEJB and PEP, which may have door and
window openings to ventilate and illuminate the home, providing better living conditions for the
users. The wall panels were subjected to soft body impact tests. The solutions proposed for the
assembly, gluing and design of the components have provided good performance for the
construction system. This research has as one of its tools a database that manages the choice of
the wood based on its density, volumetric contractions, drying, the ease for preservative
treatment, and workability, enabling the production of wall panels from high quality wood. This
work was carried through in the Amazonia region at Mato Grosso state, in the city of Sinop/MT,
the most important lumber industrial area in the state, with 313 sawmills (ABIMCI, 2004).
