ABSTRACT
The anatomical features of growth rings of 8 lianas from Leguminosae family, occurring in
mountainous relief within Atlantic forest of the Rio de Janeiro State, south-eastern of Brazil,
were studied. Four species showed distinct growth rings. The others presented cambial
variants and growth rings of sporadic occurrence. The cambial variants observed were stem
with xylem furrowed and lobed stem. Semi-ring-porous, marginal parenchyma, fibrous zone
and radially flattened latewood cells were the main features that mark the growth rings. The
species with cambial variants have some boundaries made by pith flecks and traumatic canals.
Piptadenia adiantoides, Piptadenia micracantha, Senegalia tenuifolia and Dalbergia
frutescens show well-distinct growth rings in macroscopy and microscopy, that suggests the
utilization in futures growth rings researches.
ADDITIONAL KEYWORDS: cambial variants – Mimosoideae – Papilionoideae – secondary
xylem – tropical region – wood anatomy.
