Geralmente em casal, o trinca-ferro é um habitante<br />

discreto <strong>do</strong> <strong>do</strong>ssel <strong>de</strong> matas e capoeirões, sen<strong>do</strong><br />

<strong>de</strong>tecta<strong>do</strong> sobretu<strong>do</strong> pelo canto curto e melodioso,<br />

composto por três a cinco notas assobiadas.<br />

É um <strong>do</strong>s poucos pássaros cuja dieta inclui folhas;<br />

come também frutos, silvestres ou cultiva<strong>do</strong>s, e captura<br />

cupins voa<strong>do</strong>res. Em pomares e jardins vizinhos<br />

a matas, visita come<strong>do</strong>uros com frutas.<br />

A fêmea põe ovos lustrosos, <strong>de</strong> fun<strong>do</strong> azulesver<strong>de</strong>a<strong>do</strong><br />

com uma coroazinha <strong>de</strong> riscos e pontos<br />

pretos numa das pontas.<br />

É reconheci<strong>do</strong> pelo bico muito grosso e pela garganta<br />

branca com la<strong>do</strong>s pretos.<br />

Particularida<strong>de</strong>s da espécie nas serras <strong>do</strong> Mar e<br />

Pa ranapiacaba • Pouco comum, é mais ouvi<strong>do</strong> <strong>de</strong><br />

setembro a março. É mais fácil vê-lo em capoeirões<br />

e bordas <strong>de</strong> mata.<br />

Generally seen in pairs, the Green-winged Sa lta tor<br />

is a discreet inhabitant of the tree canopy in forests and<br />

woodland. It is primarily <strong>de</strong>tected by its short, melodious<br />

song of three to five whistled notes.<br />

This is one of the few birds whose diet inclu<strong>de</strong>s<br />

le<strong>aves</strong>, though it will also eat wild and cultivated fruit<br />

and winged termites. In nearby orchards and gar<strong>de</strong>ns,<br />

it will visit bird fee<strong>de</strong>rs with fruit. The female lays shiny<br />

eggs, greenish-blue in color, with a crown of black<br />

scratches and <strong>do</strong>ts.<br />

It is easily recognized by its thick beak and white<br />

throat with black flanks.<br />

Points of interest about the species in the Mar and<br />

Paranapiacaba mountain ranges • not common; more<br />

often heard from September through March. Best seen<br />

in brushland and on the forest edge.<br />

Infelizmente, bom cantor • Por seu canto curto<br />

e melodioso, o trinca-ferro é popular como ave <strong>de</strong><br />

gaiola, sen<strong>do</strong> cobiça<strong>do</strong> por comerciantes ilegais<br />

e coleciona<strong>do</strong>res <strong>de</strong> <strong>aves</strong>. Felizmente, é comum<br />

e tem ampla distribuição geográfica, mas é uma<br />

das espécies mais apreendidas nas ações <strong>de</strong><br />

combate ao tráfico <strong>de</strong> animais silvestres.<br />

An unfortunately good singer • Because of its<br />

short, melodious song, the Green-winged Saltator<br />

is a popular fixture in the cage-bird tra<strong>de</strong>, being a<br />

favorite among illegal tra<strong>de</strong>rs and collectors. Luckily,<br />

the bird is common across an ample geographic<br />

range, but it’s one of the species most often encountered<br />

during anti-smuggling operations.<br />
