O joão-velho é um pica-pau vistoso, habitante<br />

<strong>de</strong> matas e capoeiras, que po<strong>de</strong> visitar pomares nas<br />

vizinhanças. Visto sozinho ou em casal, em geral a<br />

alguma altura, ocasionalmente po<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>scer até mesmo<br />

ao chão em busca <strong>de</strong> alimento.<br />

Alimenta-se <strong>de</strong> insetos, como formigas, larvas,<br />

cupins e besouros; sua dieta também inclui frutos.<br />

Ingere inteiros os <strong>de</strong> menor tamanho, como os da<br />

caapororoca; bica seguidamente os frutos maiores,<br />

como os da embaúba, arrancan<strong>do</strong> pedaços <strong>de</strong> polpa.<br />

Sua biologia reprodutiva é mal conhecida; sabe-se<br />

apenas que faz ninho em ocos <strong>de</strong> árvores.<br />

Particularida<strong>de</strong>s da espécie nas serras <strong>do</strong> Mar e<br />

Pa ranapiacaba • Comum, é fácil <strong>de</strong> observar, tanto<br />

ao re<strong>do</strong>r das se<strong>de</strong>s das unida<strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong> conservação<br />

como em trilhas e estradas que atr<strong>aves</strong>sam a mata.<br />

The Blond-crested Woodpecker is a pretty bird<br />

that dwells in woodland and brushland while also visiting<br />

neighboring orchards. Seen alone or in pairs, usually at<br />

a fair height, it will occasionally visit the lower reaches<br />

and even the ground in search of food.<br />

It feeds on insects such as ants, larvae, woodworm<br />

and beetles, though its diet also inclu<strong>de</strong>s fruit. Smaller<br />

fruit, such as caapororoca, are eaten whole, while<br />

larger varieties, such as the embauba, will be picked<br />

at for their pulp.<br />

The Blond-crested Woodpecker’s reproductive<br />

biology is largely unknown, other than that it nests in<br />

tree hollows.<br />

Points of interest about the species in the Mar and Paranapiacaba<br />

mountain ranges • common and easily<br />

spotted in protected areas, both around buildings and<br />

other installations, and along trails and forest roads.<br />

<strong>de</strong> pica-paus têm o hábito <strong>de</strong> perfurar ma<strong>de</strong>ira<br />

ou casca em busca <strong>de</strong> presas animais. Muitos<br />

<strong>de</strong> nossos pica-paus, entre eles o joão-velho e o<br />

benedito, comem também frutos, tanto silvestres<br />

como cultiva<strong>do</strong>s, e po<strong>de</strong>m dispersar suas sementes.<br />

A varied menu • All 50 Brazilian species of<br />

woodpecker have the habit of pecking through<br />

wood and bark in search of food. However, many<br />

woodpeckers, including the blond-crested and<br />

yellow-fronted varieties, also eat wild and cultivated<br />

fruit, and serve as seed scatterers.<br />
