Discreto, o joão-porca vive em ambientes sombrea<br />
<strong>do</strong>s e escuros, na margem <strong>de</strong> água corrente, em<br />
meio à mata das regiões montanhosas. Sozinho ou<br />
em casal, passa o tempo fuçan<strong>do</strong> na terra molhada<br />
e reviran<strong>do</strong> com o bico folhas e gravetos, que po<strong>de</strong><br />
lançar longe.<br />
Alimenta-se <strong>de</strong> insetos, inclusive aquáticos. Faz<br />
ninho no fun<strong>do</strong> <strong>de</strong> longas galerias com até um metro<br />
<strong>de</strong> extensão, que escava em barrancos à beira d’água.<br />
É <strong>de</strong>tecta<strong>do</strong> sobretu<strong>do</strong> por seu canto agu<strong>do</strong> e<br />
po ten te adapta<strong>do</strong> para ser ouvi<strong>do</strong> acima <strong>do</strong> barulho<br />
da água.<br />
Particularida<strong>de</strong>s da espécie nas serras <strong>do</strong> Mar e Paranapiacaba<br />
• Comum, po<strong>de</strong> ser visto na margem<br />
<strong>de</strong> córregos e trilhas e nas proximida<strong>de</strong>s das se<strong>de</strong>s<br />
das unida<strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong> conservação.<br />
A discreet bird, the Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper<br />
lives in sha<strong>de</strong>d, dark patches of montane forest, and<br />
prefers watercourses. Alone or in a pair, it spends the<br />
day rummaging through le<strong>aves</strong> and twigs on the damp<br />
ground, sometimes flinging forest litter long distances<br />
with its beak.<br />
It feeds on insects, including aquatic varieties. It<br />
nests <strong>do</strong>wn the back of long galleries (up to a meter<br />
long!) dug into watersi<strong>de</strong> embankments.<br />
This species is <strong>de</strong>tected first and foremost by its<br />
sharp, powerful call, which it has adapted to be heard<br />
over the gurgling water.<br />
Points of interest about the species in the Mar and<br />
Paranapiacaba mountain ranges • common; can<br />
be seen on the banks of streams and along trails near<br />
buildings and other installations in protected areas.<br />
O presi<strong>de</strong>nte da porcaria • O joão-porca é um<br />
<strong>do</strong>s poucos pássaros <strong>do</strong> Brasil adapta<strong>do</strong>s a viver<br />
à beira d’água. Embora não na<strong>de</strong> ou mergulhe,<br />
procura alimento no barro, em pedras cobertas <strong>de</strong><br />
musgo e até na água rasa. Por vasculhar a lama<br />
<strong>de</strong> chiqueiros e saídas <strong>de</strong> esgoto, ganhou nomes<br />
populares curiosos.<br />
The king of swill • The joão-porca is one of the<br />
few Brazilian birds adapted to life on the water’s<br />
edge. Though it neither swims nor dives, it forages<br />
for food in the mud, among moss-slimed stones,<br />
and even in the shallows. Its habit of rummaging<br />
through pigswill and around sewage outflows has<br />
earned it some curious popular names.<br />
