Este passarinho miúdo e rabicó vive em matas
e capoeirões, habitando o chão denso e emaranhados
da borda, em geral perto de córregos.
Alimenta-se de insetos, aranhas e outros invertebrados.
Sozinho ou em casal, costuma ficar pousado e imóvel,
por longos períodos, precipitando-se de repente para
capturar alguma presa ou mudar de poleiro.
Seu ninho é uma tigelinha, apoiada numa forquilha
de ramos finos, bem perto do chão da mata; é revestido
por fora com folhas mortas de taquarinha, colocadas
uma a uma. Por dentro é forrado com crina vegetal e
teias de aranha. A postura é de dois ovos.
Particularidades da espécie nas serras do Mar e
Pa ranapiacaba • Comum, é fácil de ver ao longo de
trilhas e estradas que atravessam a mata.
This tiny and short-tailed bird lives in forest and
woodland, preferring low-growing cover or waterside
thickets, especially on the banks of streams.
It feeds on insects, spiders and other invertebrates.
Seen either alone or in pairs, the White-throated Spadebill
will perch motionless for long periods, only to burst into
flight either to catch prey or change its perch.
Its nest is a little bowl clad with dead bamboo leaves
set into the fork of thin branches just above the forest
floor. The nest is lined with agave fibers and spider’s
webs. The female lays two eggs.
Points of interest about the species in the Mar and
Paranapiacaba mountain ranges • common and easy
to spot along forest trails and roads.
Pequenas joias ocultas • A Mata Atlântica abriga
diversas aves interessantes, tão difíceis de detectar
que só os especialistas as conhecem. Muitas, como
o patinho, vivem no sub-bosque denso e desaparecem
se as pessoas “limpam” a mata, tirando
a vegetação baixa e deixando apenas as árvores.
Little hidden jewels • The Atlantic Forest is home
to many interesting birds, some so hard to find
that only specialists know about them. Many,
such as the White-throated Spadebill, live in thick
woodland and disappear when the undergrowth
is cleared by man.
