Muito conheci<strong>do</strong> por ser comum, fácil <strong>de</strong> ver e<br />

bonito, o bentevi é agita<strong>do</strong> e barulhento. Alimenta-se<br />

<strong>de</strong> insetos e frutos; come também lagartixas, filhotes<br />

<strong>de</strong> <strong>aves</strong>, restos <strong>de</strong> comida humana e o que houver<br />

disponível.<br />

Faz ninho no topo <strong>de</strong> árvores altas. É uma gran<strong>de</strong><br />

bola <strong>de</strong> capim, gravetos e raízes finas, que o casal<br />

leva quase um mês para construir. Durante o choco<br />

<strong>do</strong>s ovos e a criação <strong>do</strong>s filhotes, o casal protege o<br />

ninho gritan<strong>do</strong> muito e atacan<strong>do</strong> possíveis preda<strong>do</strong>res.<br />

O canto característico ben-tivi!, originou o nome<br />

popular. Para cantar, pousa em locais expostos, como<br />

no alto <strong>de</strong> árvores ou <strong>de</strong> postes, chaman<strong>do</strong> a atenção.<br />

Pa ranapiacaba • Comum, fácil <strong>de</strong> ver e <strong>de</strong> ouvir nas<br />

This very well-known bird is wi<strong>de</strong>spread, easy to<br />

see and very pretty. The Great Kiska<strong>de</strong>e is an agitated,<br />

noisy bird that feeds on insects and fruit, though it will<br />

also eat small lizards, chicks of other bird species, human<br />

leftovers and anything else that happens to be around.<br />

It builds its nest at the top of tall trees. The nest is<br />

basically a large ball of grass, twigs and slen<strong>de</strong>r roots,<br />

and takes about a month to build. While incubating<br />

their eggs and raising the chicks, the pair will protect<br />

the nest by crying out and attacking possible predators.<br />

It takes its popular Brazilian name from its famous<br />

call – ben-tivi!, which sounds remarkably like “Saw ya!”<br />

in Portuguese. The bird will perch in exposed areas such<br />

as tree tops and posts in or<strong>de</strong>r to sing, thus brin ging a<br />

lot of attention to itself.<br />
