Muito conhecido por ser comum, fácil de ver e
bonito, o bentevi é agitado e barulhento. Alimenta-se
de insetos e frutos; come também lagartixas, filhotes
de aves, restos de comida humana e o que houver
disponível.
Faz ninho no topo de árvores altas. É uma grande
bola de capim, gravetos e raízes finas, que o casal
leva quase um mês para construir. Durante o choco
dos ovos e a criação dos filhotes, o casal protege o
ninho gritando muito e atacando possíveis predadores.
O canto característico ben-tivi!, originou o nome
popular. Para cantar, pousa em locais expostos, como
no alto de árvores ou de postes, chamando a atenção.

sedes de unidades de conservação.
This very well-known bird is widespread, easy to
see and very pretty. The Great Kiskadee is an agitated,
noisy bird that feeds on insects and fruit, though it will
also eat small lizards, chicks of other bird species, human
leftovers and anything else that happens to be around.
It builds its nest at the top of tall trees. The nest is
basically a large ball of grass, twigs and slender roots,
and takes about a month to build. While incubating
their eggs and raising the chicks, the pair will protect
the nest by crying out and attacking possible predators.
It takes its popular Brazilian name from its famous
call – ben-tivi!, which sounds remarkably like “Saw ya!”
in Portuguese. The bird will perch in exposed areas such
as tree tops and posts in order to sing, thus brin ging a
lot of attention to itself.
