SUMMARY11 Wood fuelThe following data are valid for 2001:Sweden’s total energy supply was 616 TWh, of which the share of bio-fuels and peat, etc.,was 16 percent.The use of bio-fuels, peat, etc., amounted to 95 TWh. 57 percent was used for industry, 34percent for district heating and 10 percent for heating one- or two dwelling buildings.The use of wood fuels in district heating amounted to 18.6 TWh.Production of saleable wood fuels:Fuel chips and hogged fuel: 8.4 TWhSawdust and bark: 9 TWhProcessed wood fuel: 5.1 TWhAround seven million m 3 (piled volume) of firewood is annually used for heating one- or twodwelling houses.This chapter covers the production and use of biofuels,especially wood fuels. The Swedish NationalEnergy Administration is responsible for energystatistics. About 15 percent of the total energysupply in Sweden comes from bio-fuels (figure11.2).The production of wood fuels is increasing andhas doubled the last five years. Most marketablewood fuels are sold as chipped logging residues fordistrict heating. The technology for making processedwood fuels (briquettes, pellets and saw powder)developed considerably throughout the nineties.These products are made from industry byproductssuch as plane shavings and sawdust(table 11.1).About 60 percent of the total consumption ofwood fuels and black liquor can be traced to thewood industry and is used for heating and otherpurposes. Remaining wood fuels are used fordistrict heating or in homes. District heating isexpanding rapidly and the location of majorconsumers of wood fuels has been mapped (figure11.6)Data on the use of firewood in homes is reportedthrough a questionnaire sent to a sample ofhouseholds. Results from these estimations arenot particularly accurate.307
