SUMMARYThis chapter gives information about the Swedishforeign trade in forest products and forest industryproducts. Most of the data are derived fromstatistics produced by the Customs Departmentand Statistics Sweden. In 1995 a new nomenclature classification systemwas introduced in the Swedish foreign trade(Combined Nomenclature; abbr. CN). All theEU member countries use CN. The foreign tradestatistics presented in this chapter are based onthis classification, as well as on the UnitedNations´nomenclature (Standard InternationalTrade Classification; abbr. SITC Rev. 3). All thecommodities are given in metric ton. Somecommodities are also given in m 3 and other units. The value is given in current prices in Swedishkronor (SEK). UN:s trade nomenclature SITC(Standard International Trade Classification) isbased on CN commodity grouping which areaggregated. The quality for foreign trade statistics hasimproved between 1995–2001. But still the statisticsfor 2002 are preliminary and care should beexercised when comparing data for differentcategories and countries.Since 1995 the roundwood separation of sawlogsand pulpwood were missing. Instead statistics onthe distribution coniferous and broad-leavedroundwood were calculated. But as from 2002 theroundwood separation of sawlogs and pulpwoodwas reintroduced in the CN. In depth informationon trade partner is shown in Forest StatisticsBulletin on our website www.svo.se/fakta/stat/ssi/engelska/default.htm. Before 1995 a time seriesfor trade with pulp wood and sawlogs and veneerlogs was published in the annual StatisticalYearbook of Forestry.Imports traditionally dominate Sweden’s foreigntrade in roundwood. Imports of roundwood, mostly from Russia and Baltic States, totalled8.1 million solid volume excl. bark in 2002.Since 1995 statistics data on chips, particles andwood residues are only available in ton. A standardconversion factor of 0.9 is used to convertton to cubic metres. Due to discrepancies inmeasurement methodology, minor quantities ofsawn and planned goods are missing in tables 15.1to 15.4.The exports of sawn and planned softwoodincreased by 4 % to 11.4 million m 3 . Six Europeancountries total export share of sawn and plannedsoftwood is presented in the figure 15.1. Data onnon-European markets, mainly in N. Africa andmiddle East are also available (figure 15.2).Figures 15.4 and 15.5 shows export- respectiveimport value for foreign trade by commoditygrouping. Net import or net exports of intermediategoods (for example of chemicals) are notseen in this simplified diagram. This diagram isinconsequent in its presentation of the sectorscontribution to the Swedish economy.314
